Warning: This game will mess with your mind.

Put aside your gaming preconceptions and embrace the unique experience that is Ctrl Alt Ego.

Play the role of yourself, minus your body.

Transmit yourself between bots and devices and exploit the innovative mechanics to solve problems your way.

Explore a deep, nonlinear, interconnected world, evocative of 70s/80s era low-budget British sci-fi television.

Shoot, sneak or get creative, be pacifist or executor.

Enjoy a darkly farcical story about the future of human consciousness.

If you enjoy immersive sims, there's every chance you'll enjoy this.

If you don't know what an immersive sim is, but you enjoy thinking for yourself and solving puzzles with no preordained solution, this game is for you.

If you're an experienced gamer looking for a fresh, engrossing experience, you just found it!

Distinct Features

  • There's no inventory... the environment itself is your always-available on-demand diegetic inventory.

  • There is no 'player death' in Ctrl Alt Ego. Your invincible, disembodied ego always lives on. If your current host is toast, pick another and carry on:

(Note: there is a traditional save/load facility too, in case you refuse to accept who you are).

  • Once you've ctrl'd a robot, it is yours to keep. Amass an army and bring it with you:

  • Use robots to get around the old fashioned way, or 'hop' from one side of an area to another in a near-instant:

Buy It

Played it on Steam already, picking it up again here because yes, it is that good. The best way to describe CAE is to imagine the likes of System Shock, Deus Ex, and Prey 2017, but oriented around being more puzzle based. The combat and stealth elements are all there (even making the distinction between lethal/non-lethal play) but how you go about it is focused on taking advantage of your environment through the ability to possess machines and enemies which all have their own unique functions and abilities. Add on top of a progression system that allows you to unlock new tools to modify your playstyle to your liking (want to go invisible, want to move around objects from a distance, want to turn objects around the world into explosives, etc.) and a simple but effective resource management via EGO (resource which allows you to possess enemies in the first place) and Juice (energy meter to use abilities) turns it into some of the most fun experimental gameplay out there for the genre. One other thing, game has some solid pacing I've seen in a game when it comes to progressive level complexity. I really thought the game was over by Level 6 and then the game slaps me with the actual final two levels which really did put everything to the test and what the player is capable of. Dev has been updating the game frequently too and recently implemented a "sandbox" mode that allows for players to generate their own levels. Can't speak on the quality of it but the dev in general has been extremely responsive on the Steam forums with fixing bugs and adding content to a game that already feels finished. Also tons of cat Polaroids. Never seen another game with so much pussy in it.

Imsim Goodness at a fair price!

This game is a wonderful immersive sim! Complete with box stacking, vents, alternate paths, and super-customizable builds that you love, you're bound to find a role in-game for yourself that suits you best! There's a lot to love here. Funny computer puns, fun movement mechanics(and exploits), a tongue in cheek sci-fi story that will have you wanting more. It's all packaged in a sensible size (under 20 gigs) as well. Support a small time developer and give this game the love and attention it deserves!

Puzzle game being mistaken for imm. sim

Nice indie game made with passion and limited resources. But comparing it with games like Deus Ex (org. and remakes) or Prey (immersive sims) is a mistunderstanding to say at least. No NPC interaction and no dialog choices, corridor-like level design made it just another puzzle game. I can get it as somekind low budget adaption of more expensive titles made by bigger devs, but i just dont like its retro style gfx, abstract robots and absurd physics. 3.5/5 but potential is there.

Exceptional.

This game is unique. It falls loosely in the immersive sim genre, but unlike almost every other game that falls into that category, this one feels wholly original. It gave me some of that magical feeling I had in the early days of 3D games when people were more commonly building their games and engines from the ground up rather than leaning heavily on existing design and technology. It has a cohesive style and a singular vision. It looks and plays like a labor of love that may not have had huge resources behind its development, but the vision to excel within its limitations. The character and feel of this game is enhanced, for example, by clever and immersive use of shaders which draw you into the game's setting, not just add a shiny coat of paint to something generic. Everything feels bespoke. The gameplay itself is unique and interesting, with unique freedoms and limitations that yield interesting puzzle solving that is wholly integrated into the gameplay rather than being something tacked on. I'll leave explaining the gameplay to other reviews and sources of information as I'd just be repeating things. Suffice to say that I found the experience it offers engrossing and memorable. I hope the developers have enough success with this to unleash their creativity on another project.

Immersive sim plus

I bought Ctrl, Alt, Ego on Steam because I never thought it would show up here. Would it have been worth the wait? Absolutely, but it would have been doing my self, and the developer, a disservice by not buying it day one. Ctrl is a fabulous game and innovates on the "immersive sim" formula. It offers so much choice in how to approach the game world far more than most similar games that came before it. Mindthunk put a lot of work into making his world a living breathing place and put a lot of thought in making every tool at the players disposal count. Offering the player an almost excessive amount of player freedom. If you like System Shock, Arcane's Prey, Thief, Deus Ex, than I think you will love this game. It was not inspired by them directly but pays tribute none the less. Ctrl stands on it's own two feet, surpassing the games that came before it, with it's unique setting, story, and mechanics. If this game does not blow you away than none will.
