Crystal Caves is a colorful game with arcade-style gameplay, puzzles and graphics. As Mylo Steamwitz, you'll enter cave after cave of adventure, gathering the treasures of each, while evading hazards galore!

The game begins with Mylo rocketing to the Altairian star system on a simple treasure hunt. But what happens is far more dangerous than even Mylo bargained for. He enters an underground world of chambers full of alien technology and traps. Strange alien creatures and robots inhabit the caves, protecting the priceless crystals from money-greedy explorers.

On some levels Mylo will even walk up-side-down! Other levels have such low gravity that the recoil from Mylo's laser pistol can knock him into other dangers! Some levels are without lights, and others are packed full of falling hammers egg-dropping alien bats, free roaming slither eyes, web-shooting alien spiders, and much, much more.

Can you help Mylo strike it rich and quit his day job?
  • 48 creative and fun-filled levels, such as zero gravity or no lights.
  • Lots of crazy creatures to defeat.
  • Many ingenious puzzles to solve.

A piece of history ... just not that fun

A slight precursor to Duke Nukem, this game deserves its place in history for being a stepping platform to bigger games eventually leading to 3D Realms. The game itself, however, isn't that great - it's hard, not always fair and it's easy to get stuck. Graphically it resembles Commander Keen which was released a few months earlier but that's no bad thing. Sadly enough the controls and action are sub par compared to Commander Keen - it's not a bad game, just quite average.

One episode is enough

The world three overworld has an inescapable area in the top left, those 3-4 levels MUST be completed LAST. I loved the shareware version growing up, and I don't spending some money on it now, but it's a bad deal. It's just more of the same, and with more of those dumb invisible platforms and pixel-perfect jumps. They're still not too hard, but there are a lot of gotcha-areas which force you to reset the levels. I recommend the first episode, but not the other two.

Quite difficult

I actually like this game a lot. The controls are tight and it is quite challenging. Especially the later episodes are very punishing. Ammo can be quite sparse, so killing everything might not always be an option and you can easily maneuver yourself into a no win situation. Standard precedure will probably be to spend a few lifes to explore a level and learn the lay of the land to find a way to solving it. You can only save outside of levels, so you will be repeating parts of levels quite often. Anyways, I played the first episode quite often and had a lot of fun with it. But I was never able to beat the later ones.

Solid game play and a good challenge

This is game is the definition of a Good Old Game to me. I played episode 1 back in the day and loved it. Now I finally had a chance to play all episodes. Did this change my opinion? To be very honest, for all games made in this era, which were sold in the same shareware format, the problem is that episode 1 is by for the most fun and shows all the features well enough. Crystal Caves does not have many features to begin with and the same holds here as with its peers. With this knowledge, my expectations were not that high before I started on episode 2 and 3. If you love platform games with solid controls and love levels to gradually become more difficult, this is the game for you. At episode 3 you're really at the end of your chair and you know that every death is your own fault. Especially the last episode is punishing! This is the power of the game and there is not much more to find here. Buy this game on a nice discount if it appeals to you. I mostly bought it for the nostalgia, but I can image it is not enough regarding the difficulty and monotony.

3 Stars plus one for nostalgia.

This was probably my most played game in the early 90s on my 386sx. The gameplay can be very unforgiving, plenty of game breaking actions, instant death enemies / actions and ammunition for your one single weapon is very limited. Level design is pretty varied and it's often not obvious what will kill you, additionally many levels are built around a unique concept like inverted gravity, darkness, and my favourite level, one made almost entirely of destructable blocks. At te end of the day, I'd say it's worth playing to just watch Mylo's crotch rattle whenever he croaks.
