Crypt Custodian is a charming metroidvania/zelda-like about cleaning up the afterlife. 

You play as Pluto - a mischievous cat who has just died, and landed in the afterlife's palace. After a brief and disastrous meeting with the Afterlife Guardian - Kendra - you are banished from the palace and sentenced to clean... FOREVER!! 

Explore the vast grounds that surround the palace, battle beasts with your trusty broom, and gain new abilities to expand your map. Solve puzzles, discover secrets, and… organize an ambush to break back into the palace! 

 

A Charming Cast Of Characters

Meet and befriend all the other bad ghosts who live outside the palace. Learn how they died, and what caused them to face eternal banishment! And then head on over to the local haunt- The Sinner’s Inn- to chat with the ghosts you meet, and upgrade your gear.

I will greatly recommend this game

Very cute game. Controls are good (I played with PS4 controller). The only occasional problem I had was with snowball bouncing reacting not to the indicator of the snowball but to the facing of the character. There is an great, customizable assist mode – I have a great problem with timed challenges, so it made the game much more enjoyable while still having some challenge. I especially love that jumping is floaty just enough to course-correct mid-jump. There are great quality of life options too (fast travel, custom markers), special power refill at checkpoints. The story is simple (you help people in afterlife) but in its simplicity and sincerity lies its strength. There is none of this annoying 'ironic' writing so frequent today in some places. To fully complete it took me about 15 hours.

Fun, funny, cute, just the right length

This game is a great way to spend a few days playing. It features a bigger map than I was expecting, some fun, challenging puzzles and boss fights, and just an overall good time.

An achievement in game design

This is not Metroid, nor is it Dead Cells, and definitely not Hollow Knight. It's much easier than those, but it doesn't stop Crypt Custodian from being one of hidden gems of 2024, and a wonderful example of great design based on conscious choices. This game respects your time by not punishing dying, brings you to a lovely world, where you'll make some new, quirky friends, and let's you just relax. It's accessible, easy to pick up, but not as easy as to be boring. If you want a cute little metroidvania-style adventure, that will let you chill, but will be enough of a challenge (just enough not to become frustrating), this one's for you. I'm waiting for expansions! BTW, this year I played both Super Metroid and Hollow Knight for the first time, and I love all three equally, together with Crypt Custodian.

Well Written and Solid Gameplay

it feels like a mix between 2d Zelda and Metroidvania. I'm 6 hours in and really enjoying it. The atmosphere is nice and I love the art direction. I generally struggle maintaining intrested in games but this game has me locked in
