Flawed, but still better than others.

To understand why I gave 4 starts to this game some context is needed. When Crime Cities was released, it had one real competitor (similar setting and the implementation of the mechanics) and it was G-Police. Both inspired by the likes of Descent and Forsaken, both set in a futuristic urban environment. Crime Cities however did so much more. The controls were great, the tone more mature, and the visuals dark yet vibrant (obviously inspired by the cities from "Blade Runner"). Sure, it sometimes did not manage to keep the pacing, at times the difficulty was all over the place, and some missions were just too simple, but for the ones that years earlier loved Decent and Forsaken, and were disappointed by G-Police, this was a pleasant surprise. It's not a perfect game and if you do not enjoy 6DoF games generally, this won't change your mind. However, if you are in fact one of the people this game was made for, give it a try. You will have some fun.

Aged with style

This is the game that gets one's guts by the dense atmosphere it creates. Although it has been eighteen years since its release, Crime Cities still provides players with dynamic and challenging gameplay. The story told in the game is not the prime factor, but adds a few bits to the dark, cyberpunk world developed by Techland. One must never turn the music off, as it REALLY builds up tension and emotions. Actually, the soundtrack is what makes this game, at least for me - it is perfectly fitted with the futuristic environment (I admit, I sometimes play the soundtrack aside from the game). The AI of enemies is a no-brainer, it follows a simple pattern - when you are in the range of enemy weapons, they shoot at you no matter the obstacles or the fact, that they shoot at each another ;-). Hostile vehicles start their pursuit either on sight or as soon as you fire upon them. The missions offered by the game follow a few patterns, but for most of the time, it is all about destroying hostile targets. Be careful about abandoning some of them, as it may end up with "Deux ex Machina" represented by a bunch of fast and swift flyers with only one directive - shoot you down. Despite the lack of real NPC's, some figures are quite memorable (and I don't necessarily mean the main ones), thanks to the way they "speak" to you via e-mails. I will stress it once more - neither the plot nor the people are the strength of this production. There are a few flaws (somewhat buggy AI, a few unbalanced missions), but honestly said - I had lots of fun with this game. It also forces you to think what you spend your earned money on. The diversity of equipment allows you to choose the best strategy for you. I wish they remade it one day or developed a sequel (or a prequel). Thank you, Techland, for this game. You made my childhood and now I could replay one of my favorite titles.

Still great.

I remember that game when it was relased. Spend lot of hours traveling and upgrading my spacecab. If You remember very old Quarantine game and like CP lore than this game is for You. Great game in Blade Runner style. But please fix HUD in 1920x1080. Part of the HUD is under screen edge.

3.5/5 - Good, play on very easy setting

Reading the description of the game on GOG, I have to laugh: not only does it vastly exaggerate when it says that this is a "revolutionary mix of shooter and future vehicle simulator" but it also wrongly states that there are 4 distinct cities (there are only 3 as can already be guessed from the game's intro - and no the tutorial level doesn't count being just a short virtual simulator). Crime Cities was released in 2000, long after G-Police (1997) and even after the latter's sequel G-Police: Weapons of Justice (1999); BHunter, released in 1999, is even more similar as it brought to life almost exactly the same concept as Crime Cities (the differences are in the story motivations and the order of missions - which is entirely linear in the case of BHunter). With all that said, the good news is Crime Cities is a good game. This is a short version of my review, which can be found in its complete form on this game's specific forum: https://www.gog.com/forum/crime_cities/review_355_stars_good_but_play_on_very_easy_difficulty_setting Like the other aforementioned games, it uses the cyberpunk aesthetic to build a dystopian future heavily inspired by Blade Runner (and the thrill of the film's flight sequences through near-future Los Angeles). The game casts you in the role of an undercover agent who must infiltrate the ecosystem of Pandemia: the intro cinematic does a very good job at setting up the story, but the storytelling in-game never quite manages to be as compelling. Repetition is the biggest problem: visiting 3 planets should provide decent variety, but the overall feel is similar; the soundtrack is good but is the same throughout the whole game; the mechanics limit your approach to any given problem, and the same difficult brand of guerrilla dogfighting is repeated over and over again (balance is an issue which is why this is the first game I completed on a difficulty setting lower than medium). No VTOL - this is not a true 6DoF title. Mouse+keyboard is best.

Does a certain kind of thing very well

First off, I recommend pairing this game with the Blade Runner soundtrack & maybe some background radio chatter. The in game soundtrack is alright, but is basically a half hour loop. Second, this game isn't an all-time classic or anything. But it's got a lot of novel ideas and creativity. Basically, for better or worse it feels like what being an Uber driver/hired gun in 2049 will feel like, I'm pretty sure. Save often, and look up cheats if you need them. Good for a weekend of fun, especially if you get it on sale for like a buck fifty.
