Description
Discover a large, living landscape - the surface a world called Albia. You exist in this world only as a virtual presence, a sort of remote-control existence, which the computer portrays as a hand-shaped mouse cursor. In this world are a range of locations and strange creatures, related loosely (and with considerable poetic license) to Northern myth. You begin near to the long-abandoned home of a family of Norns (small furry creatures), where a few eggs, languishing in a broken-down incubator, are almost all that remains of the Nornir race.

The first game in this twin pack introduces you to the world of artificial life technology and the Norns of Albia. Than you can discover the all-new Norns, Ettins and Grendels. Explore the Shee Laboratories and discover the all-new Norns inhabiting a vibrant, living eco-system - find the Genetic Splicer and defend your Norns against the vicious and disease-ridden Grendels.
  • Creatures: The Albian Years is a compilation of Creatures 1 with both Life Kits, Creatures 2 with its Life Kit and 6 Official Object Packs
  • Unique gameplay centered around breeding and raising autonomous, computer-controlled Norns
  • A complex AI system that mimics real behaviors

Windows 10 Compatible!!

I am using the latest update of Windows 10, Fall 2017 Creators Update, I think. Anyhow, Windows 10 was not listed for this game, but I love Creatures, so I took a chance that I could get it to work. Creatures 1 seems to work right away, after installed. But Creatures 2 wouldn't get past the World Launcher. It kept giving some obscure error message. Using Google, I finally found someone that had gotten it work on Windows 8, and he wrote that Creatures 2 would not work if run as Administrator or in Compatibility mode, but that you had to request the reduced color mode, and set it to 16 bit. Voila! It works very well. The menus are a bit wonky, but they work. I am happy. Thank you (to GOG).

Without modern equivalent

Though Creatures was my very first experience with video games and I am understandably nostalgic, to this day I maintain that it lacks a modern equivalent, despite the advanced technology. Other artificial life simulations like The Sims or Spore simply fall flat. They don't simulate life so much as copy it, and badly. Whereas Creatures is accompanied with complex genetics, biochemistry, neurology and real evolution. A point many people complain about is that you cannot force the Norns to do anything; you can only suggest, and they may not obey you. This reflects life more than any other feature. This game is not about playing God - it is about the responsibility you will feel towards these creatures, and raising them to care for themselves, like a parent.

AMD Users Beware

From what I tried of the game it looks solid. Like a super complex tamagochi. The only reason I would give it such a low rating is that the game is unplayable on AMD graphic cards. There is a fix by downgrading your drivers but, you know, that's just absurd.

An old classic with countless issues

First off, if you want to enjoy this game you will be forced to play in 16bit which is a massive pain. Also, you better like whatever weird mix of English and your system's default language you get presented with because there is no changing that. Lastly, you better be very very lucky or the performance will be so bad you might believe somebody struck at least one digit from your processor's speed. You get the original game. No improvements. Nothing to make it really work as it should on modern systems. Glitches and issues abound beyond anything I have seen when I played this so many years ago. Be prepared for that. That said, if your tolerance for suffering is high enough, you might break through to the amazing classic underneath that has captivated countless breeders of digital quasi-lifeforms so long ago.

Did not work for me. My fault, though.

I hoped, I could get it to work on my Steam Deck. Unfortunately not. Nobody promised, it would - so, it's OK.
