Federal reservations writing this review, that real banks are bahaving like this £10 bargain. Unfortunately my game crashed at the famed (CYMK paranoid joke!?) of the anchor boss fight. The same thing happened all those years ago with Binary Domain. To some extent I linked the two together to similar unfortunate 'chandelier' crises. Splendid otherwise.
Control is easily one of the most frustrating and unenjoyable games I have ever played. First of all, the graphics in my opinion are awful with soft muddy textures, faded washed out colors with a purplish blurry tone, and areas that are either way too bright or way too dark. There is also a complete lack of direction where to go or what exactly to do because there are no markers. And all you have is a worthless map and highly ambiguous objectives that are supposed to guide you through an insanely huge maze of a building. Rocket launching bullet sponge enemies also spawn out of thin air and never stop respawning while you backtrack and wonder around aimlessly facing the same enemies over and over again. In fact, most of my time with this game was spent doing just that. The checkpoint system is also absolutely terrible with the same old crap "souls-like" point where you respawn after each time you die, which is always WAY WAY far away from where you died. Also, the only way to regenerate health is to run over spots where you just killed enemies, which means it is very difficult to gain health during a gun fight. I also experienced constant random frame rate drops no matter what graphical settings. If wondering around aimlessly confused about where to go next while bullet sponge rocket launching enemies constantly respawn and kill you, sending you back to a respawn point very far away and then doing this over and over and over again sounds fun to you then by all means go for it. Definitely not my type of game though.
This is one of the most compelling universes I have ever experienced in any piece of media. The main story is, in my opinion, secondary to the world in which is unfolds.
That being said, fighting the same enemies over and over when you are searching for a certain area is not fun, and boss fights suck ass to the point that it made me rage-uninstall multiple times. The developers foresaw this and added cheat options such as increasing the rate at which you recover energy, the damage you receive, etc.
I did the main story, some side missions, and did a couple of missions of the first DLC, but I just can't deal with the combat anymore.
An interesting game with an intriguing premise but has very rough gameplay, a story that starts strong but fumbles and never actually resolves, schizophrenic difficulty that never really makes you feel like you are making progress and worst of all, a very interesting visual presentation held back by bad game design. I don't know how a game like this could get such high reviews but I can't recommend this wreck.
