Unique, immersive, innovative, classic

This game was way ahead of its time. It's one of the first genre-hybrids that combined several game styles to create a vastly immersive mix: It's a grand strategy with tactical battles, roleplaying elements and a first person action game all in one. To put all that into one game was a very ambitious endeavor, but Conqueror makes it work beautifully to give you that "live the life" experience (within the late 90s technological limits) and leaves you with the question: Why haven't developers created more games like this? There's nothing like getting to manage a little medieval fief, recruiting armies, traveling the lands, taking part in tournaments to win fame, fortune and the hearts of ladies watching you joust, scouring the weapon shops for the elusive Kingslayer sword, and ultimately conquering the whole of England as you storm castles in person with an elite cadre of your loyal men. Although I've been gaming hard since the mid 90s, I can only name a handful of games with such a wide array of gameplay styles. Defender of the Crown (80s), Birthright (90s) and maybe Mount & Blade (2000s) are some of the few that could be called similar. It's a shame there aren't more games like this, but I firmly believe this was and still will be (should be!) the future of gaming. Thank you Software Sorcery for having the vision and the guts to develop this gem, Sierra for publishing it and GOG for bringing it back for newer generations to experience and older ones to enjoy once more.

Very Broken

While a great game back in 1997, I can't reccomend this. The game is virtually unplayable on here, as the in game timing is way off. You basically have 10 seconds in every month cycle. This needs to be fixed in order for the game to even be playable.

Mount and Blade's Ancient Ancestor

When I saw this pop up it looked like my kind of thing. After messing around with the settings in order to get it to work full screen, I was amazed by what I saw. You play as a lesser English Knight in the early middle ages. You start with an undeveloped fief and a small amount of money. From here you are free to raise massive armies and siege your rivals, develop your struggling fief or earn glory in tournaments. Sadly, 1 of these activities has aged horribly. The tournaments are great fun, split between a doom-style Melee contest and a kind of awkward joust. The fief development is a city builder-lite, you can develop your castle, the village, and the surrounding forest. This is where you make your money, and you really need to make money. The battles though....the battles are awful. After raising troops you can fight wandering bandits or attack other knights. Once you engage them, the game switches to a simple RTS. Unfortunately, the interface is so crude, the units move so slowly and the battles take so long that these are simply unenjoyable. The worst part of it is that most of the time your troops literally line up in a single file line and wack at the enemies. I recommend this game, but I also recommend auto-resolving the tactical battles. If you do that then you are in for a wonderfully absorbing simulation of the middle ages.

Don't Believe the Gripe

Purchased & installed this classic from the 90's. No issues with getting the game installed & running. It runs through a DOSbox emulator & the standard config settings make the mouse FAR too touchy. Time passes very quickly & a month can go by before you manage to find the target city to which you're traveling. Without additional tweaks it is functional but unplayable. The trick is to edit your DOSbox config settings. Go to your search engine of choice & you'll find plenty of users who have uploaded either the steps needed to tweak your settings or those who have uploaded the config file which you can drop in the game folder. Other than that, use CTRL + F11 to slow down the number of cycles in DOSbox and CTRL +F12 to speed it up. Do that & you'll be jousting & raiding in no time at all.

Great game, but unplayable here.

This game filled pretty much me and a friend's summer in 1995. Super fun game. Naturally, seeing it here, I wanted all the nostalgia. However, The GOG version of this game is completely unplayable. I'd really, really love to see GOG do something to slow this down so that it actually works properly. Give us a patch, or something so that we won't have wasted our money.
