Commander Keen's very first adventure, and the debut of id's groundbreaking side-scrolling technology. In the game you play the role of Commander Keen: the alter-ego of an eight year-old genius by the name of Billy Blaze. When Billy learns that the Earth is in danger, he dons his brother's football helmet and his homemade interstellar spaceship to become Commander Keen -- Defender of the Earth!
Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy!:
Episode 4: Secret of the Oracle (1991)
Episode 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991)
You are eight-year-old Billy Blaze, boy genius to your neighborhood. Commander Keen to the rest of the universe. It's time to grab your trusty pogo stick and neural stunner, climb into the cockpit of your homemade Megarocket and blast off for the Shadowlands. To prevent the obliteration of life as we know it, you'll have to battle your way past deadly hazards and devious creatures, or end up as space toast.
Collection of 5 awesome classic DOS platformers created by the geniuses at id software who would later set the PC world on fire with Doom and Quake. Excellent part of PC gaming history and still fun to play today, but alas Keen 6 is missing as well as Keen Dreams. Hopefully someday GOG could negotiate the rights to sell them someday though.
First of all, I'd like to say that the keen games are all awesome. Something I notice in the reviews is that the pack is missing Keen Dreams and Aliens Ate My Babysitter. Now, for anyone about to buy this game, know that you can download Keen Dreams for free. Keen 6, you can only legally get a demo of. Sorry about that. Keen Dreams is shareware. It does also have a commercial counterpart. However, the entire game (as far as I know) is in the shareware version. In other words, you can get the whole game for free, legally. Head to the site 'classicdosgames.com' and search to find a shareware copy.
Keen 6 is tougher. There is a shareware copy of it on the site listed above, however its only a few levels of the game. Unfortunately, the game isn't available for purchase anywhere. You may either deal with the shortened version, get a physical copy, or find a copy of it online for free, which is illegal, but not too bad. won't say where you can get a copy, but I'm sure you can find one. As far as I know, the rights of the game are owned by Atari, although they don't even acknowledge the game. So if you want this game, you can make the decision on how you get it. I'm not going to do that for you. But hey, Keen Dreams is legally free!
I suggested this pack should be on gog.com a while ago... And here it is!
Episode 1 was the first pc platforming game to implement screen scrolling, thanks to John Carmack's genius coding.
Spent a lot of time back in a day, playing games from this series. They might look crude nowadays but underneath outdated graphics lies motherload of Funium and Playium.
As usual it is with ID's work - this series was a spark that ignited revolution in pc gaming.
This is great, brings back memories!
However... I know there is a Keen 6 (Aliens ate my Babysitter), and that one is not in this pack unfortunately. Maybe it has to do with the fact it was published by FormGen instead of Apogee.
