Cool visuals, bad voice acting, hollow

Visually speaking, this game is gorgeous - especially if you're a sucker for voxels. Otherwise, Cloudpunk and it's DLC makes for a rather hollow experience. You play as Rania, courier for the eponymous delivery service: Cloudpunk. A shady enterprise whose drivers seldomly works more than a few shifts, Cloudpunk employs Rania and send her out in the rainy nights of Nivalis, a huge and sprawling metropolis filled with vice, conflicts and misery. Cloudpunk is a fairly straight forward Dark Future-story, straight from the 90s, mixed with certain political messages that oughta cater to Gen Z mixed with odd satire. While you navigate your path between neon lights, garish billboards and howling police sirens in order to either collect or drop off a package, Cloudpunk tries it best to enterain you with constant dialogues between Rania, the car's AI, her handler at Cloudpunk HQ and the occasional passenger. The endless banter is often tedious although it can sometimes be a tad entertaining. Satire can be fun but a game that is 90 % walking simulator really can't afford to have such a poor cast when it comes to the voice actors. The delivery is so stiff it belongs in a morgue and the game has weird pauses between each characters lines which renders any attempt at making the dialogue feel natural pointless. In the DLC, the developers try to spice things up a bit with a more adult-oriented language (plenty of F-bombs incoming), a couple of escape sequences and even an optional racing mini game (that is almost impossible to loose) but it's way too little to make a real difference. Before releasing on GOG, the developer Ion Lands was opaque, to say the least, about the DRM they used for Cloudpunk which made me less than eager to pick this game up but a juicy discount made me fall for the temptation. All in all: not a terrible game but besides looking pretty, Cloudpunk has too little going for it to merit a higher grade than a 2/5.

All about the atmosphere and dialogue!

I own the game in another platform the name of which I shall not pronounce and the only reason I am writing this review is because I found the only review here misleading. Cloudpunk is from an indie developer and is a quirky experience that in fact is strongest in it's dialogue and writing. The voice acting is acceptable, certainly indie quality, but very spot on for the atmosphere it aims to build. The writing is masterful, every character contributes to fueling a dystopian sci-fi city that has lost it's humanity so much that artificial intelligence is actually more humane. You will have to explore your way through Nivalis and get to know it's "people" which will put you in interesting and sometimes unexpected situations - all of those very well tightened together by the creatively crafted modernistic issues of the inhabitants. The only aspect in which the developer fails with Cloudpunk in my opinion is in it's choice of voxel art approach towards building the game. The very obviously very well thought-out design of Nivalis would have greatly benefited from a much more softer brush drawing touch which could have pronounced even better the dystopian feeling of the atmosphere in the game. Again this is mostly from a personal preference point of view. Overall, Cloudpunk is a must for sci-fi fans and a good atmospheric experience that will make for a good future franchise if the devs invest their time into expanding the capabilities of their team.

Uninspired. Mediocre at best

During my years in gaming I've seen some bad games. Not many. But this one has the quality that makes even a technically smooth well running game bad - lack of inspiration. The writing here is BAD. This game lacks character almost completely. It wouldn't be fair to say it doesn't have a character. It has one and it's MEDIOCRE. I did finish it, but only because i hate to drop games or stories. I regretted every single hour I've spent at it. I wish I never pick it up. Money - they can be refunded. Time can't be. The story here is very, very bad. It could be even worse, but that's hard to imagine. It's not just that there isn't an original idea in whole of the game, I could live with that. It's just it lack any inspiration, care, love for the genre. The thing is hollow. It's meaningless, pointless. It has a bit of a plot, a bit of drama, but it's all just scraps. It would be better if it was simpla an arcade pixelated delivery simulator, as it has plot this does actually make things worse. There is no freedom in the gameplay. The gameplay itself is extremely smplistic. There is no way anyone can convince me that running around in a hover car as it's implemented here is of any interest, no, it has to be the plot, which as I said before, is very dull. I won't spoil it, but suffice to say you will have a series of linear quests, which sometimes have choices, and those will play out in a later game, but they are irrelevant to the story or your character. You have no say in anything other than those few choices and an endgame choice, which I barely cared about. The story is so removed, so general, so bland. The one thing resempling fun was a private investigator droid which communicated in (on purpose, I believe) a bad noir-novel verse. And trust me it looks better here that it is in the game. Every voice entry in this game is 3-5 times longer (and shallower) than it should have been. Ugh. I really don't recommend wasting your time.

Cyberpunk atmosphere done right

I own Cloudpunk on another platform, but I wanted to review it here to encourage folks to check out this amazing game. Cloudpunk, as a game, is mostly a pick-up-and-deliver fest. If you stuck to just the core story, you'd probably get bored. The fun part of the game is driving around the main city, Nivalis, parking and exploring the different sections of the city. This is a voxel game, but Nivalis really looks dark, gloomy and gorgeous despite the style. Another strength is the dialogue. The characters are relatable, have flaws amd feel like real people. I'd encourage you to talk to all thr characters you can, as many have interesting things to say. Cloudpunk is a super indie game, but it does so much well and truly captures the cyberpunk future. Don't miss out on this one!

Interesting Blade Runner atmosphere

Despite not agreeing entirely with the political view in some dialogues, choices and missions, I enjoyed playing it. I felt like I was in a blade runner cyberpunk dystopia inside a corporation controlled city with a hard police that acts like a dictatorship, banning music and certain cultural activities etc. The soundtrack is amazing, the only thing I can say kind of bad is that Rania sometimes sounds way too "politically correct", but the voice acting I did not find it so bad.
