Someone should have warned the Covenant children: “Never read aloud strange rituals.” Little did they know that their childish game would unleash unspeakable horrors upon the unsuspecting world. Now, many years later, Jeremiah Covenant, the last sane sibling, lies on his deathbed knowing his fragile existence is the only thing restraining the curse. His only hope is Patrick Galloway, a fellow soldier from the Great War and a specialist in abolishing evil abominations.
Welcome to Clive Barker’s Undying, a horrifying FPS romp of curses, strange, mad creatures, and family dysfunction gone terribly wrong. Step into the shoes of Patrick Galloway as you attempt to banish the evil using your arcane magic and the ever-dependable six shooter of metal grace. Pray to whatever god you believe in because this journey may end up costing your soul. First person shooter meets the contemporary master of horror fiction, don't miss it!
best use the glide app that comes with the GOG version, setting as DirectX using the original settings setup app refuses to run, using the glide app you can set Vulken api and use widescreen even ultra widescreen and fit to screen.
An interesting variety of weapons and enemies.
Different locations.
Starts off as a true horror game however the game gets less spooky as it goes on. You go from places like a mansion, to catacombs, etc, to pirate hideouts and to weird tribal looking places. And it just progressively loses its tone.
Although the graphics are old I love the aesthetics and atmosphere.
Last boss fight is kinda crap.
Undying is a horror classic but I have had no end of problems attempting to get it to run on Windows 10, some people have success, some don't but at the price it's definitely worth the risk.
It's been a long time since a game has managed to creep me out, and I certainly didn't expect a 20 year old game that flew far under my radar at the time to be the next one to do it. After a simple widescreen patch it ran perfectly on my modern hardware.
For the most part, the writing is exactly what you'd expect from Barker - perfect 80s/90s gothic horror vibes. The accents are largely miserably bad, but the performances are convicted and the sound design and aesthetic combine to create a world that is shockingly evocative and creepy, and a story that hits the right emotional beats and keeps you wanting to know more all the way to the end.
The enemies hit hard, and get stranger and stranger, until you feel like the only sane person in a mad house. There are moments of frustration - thankfully rare platforming, and the occasional ramble through a maze-like house - but these were always relatively short-lived. It runs the gamut of gothic horror tropes, but still manages to feel creative and original. The best compliment I can offer is that it feels like staying up all night reading a good pulp horror novel - I couldn't put it down.
