Among the best turn based rpg/games ever

I would have to say that expedition 33 is easily in the top 10 JRPG style games ever made. Likely it’s even higher than top 10, but I have to account for recency bias given that the game is still pretty new. It features a compelling story, a well written cast of characters, cutting edge graphics with a beautiful art style that are well optimized despite being on unreal engine 5, a phenomenal score that will be talked about for decades to come and measure toe to toe with the best, And a very engaging and rewarding battle system. There are some minor net pics that I could put out such as some balancing issues with characters and progression, a steep, difficulty spike happening at a couple of points in the game, and a few bits of filler content that don’t really add to the experience, but no game is perfect. Then again, perfection is not art, and this game most certainly is.

So Far So Impressive

(Hurrah for GOG enabling editing reviews.) I've been eagerly awaiting the day this might arrive on GOG. Instabuy with zero regrets. I'm only a handful of hours in, but I'm already smitten. This is the first time in a LONG time that a game has actually engaged me with its storytelling. The opening hour or two is dialogue-heavy, but there are so many questions swirling around what's happening, who everyone is, and what they're about to do (and what is being done to them) that it is incredibly intriguing. The combat, as you may know, is turn-based, but with a significant emphasis on timing for parries and dodges. I was concerned about this, and I have indeed taken a couple L's because of it, but I'm relieved to find the game isn't unforgiving. I just hit retry and did a little better. One piece of advice: I'm on an AMD GPU (RX7600) and in the Graphics settings, I found that TSR looks MUCH better than XeSS (particularly when set to 100%). Without it, everything seem a tad blurry and everyone's hair seemed to have a sort of jagged, smudging outline. I'll update more as I get further in.

An absolute mastepriece

I've been playing games since the late 80s. At the time of writing I have beaten 347 games. Out of all of them I only ever rated 24 games as 5-stars. This is the 24th. An amazing story, remarkable characters, beautiful visuals, great combat, and spectacular music. I can't think of anything I dislike about it, and I'm not even into turn-based PRGs. I've beaten it on GamePass, but I will buy it here as some point as well. Just to support the developers.

Best Game as of September 28th

When I finished basically 100%ing Clair Obscur. I was at a loss for words. There's nothing I could really say that would do it justice. My HowLongToBeat says I have 96 games beaten. Clair Obscur is by far the best game I've ever beaten. It's not really close either. I really don't think this is recency bias quite frankly. If it is, I usually notice it. It ends perfectly too. In 2024, there were 29 categories at the Game Awards. Clair Obscur qualifies to run for 13-14 of them. Of those that it could run for, I think Clair Obscur locks in like 4 of them and could reasonably win 2-4 others. Those being: Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Score and Music, and Best RPG Possibly: Best Art Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Performance. Hell, throw in Game for Impact too The Game Awards are about to look very interesting. Unless a world breaker of a game drops between now and the next 6 months, we're about to hear a certain 4 word title again and again and again. No 10/10 game I would describe as perfect. Even games with no flaws can sometimes lack ambition. But this might just be the closest thing to perfect. This is the ♥♥♥♥ they'll be discussing in classes years from now. -Steam Review from June 5th It's been 3 months. Still the best game I've ever beaten. I'm so sorry Silksong. Maybe in a more merciful universe.
