A love letter to the JRPGs of old

I own well in excess of 3000 games, most of them on gog or physical format. I love games and I've played them for over 35 years with passion. This might well be the best game I've ever played. At the very least the best game I've played in the last 15-20 years. Mind blowingly good writing, sublime soundtrack, astonishing art direction and the gameplay... I could spend all day discussing how good it is. It is a slap in the face to Square Enix, who have been trying to get the JRPG formula modernised for decades now and, while they have produced plenty of decent or even great titles, they've not managed to touch the heights of the PS1 era. Well this game just shows how turn based final fantasy-esque combat should have evolved and reaches and perhaps surpases those heights. Exploring the world, with an overworld and traversing mechanics not too different from old PS1 era final fantasy games, the simple yet engaging side quests, some with very interesting story development, others you can do but don't have to, it's all a huge love letter to those games of old albeit with a beautiful french touch. Can't recommend enough if you like JRPGs

A masterpiece

This game is a masterpiece. More than that, it's special. Here are a few reasons why I think that way: 1) Nothing about this game should have "clicked" for me. Literally nothing. A sad and grim story? Not for me, I like my escapism light-hearted, thank you. Turn based combat? Tired of that, chief. Surrealistic visuals? Saw the first teaser like a year ago, was convinced this one was a "pass" from me. Et cetera. — When a game manages to beat all your pre-existing negative biases against it and climbs all the way to the top of your favourites list, you know it's something special. 2) Out of all my friends whom I'd managed to convince to give it a shot, not a single one ended up disliking the game. I'm in a mid-sized gaming clan. That's quite a few people. Most actually loved it, even if it wasn't their usual genre, their usually preferred narrative tone, or even if they weren't initially into single player games at all. 3) This game single-handedly re-awakened my passion for games. I'd enjoyed (and beaten) more single-player games in the months since finishing E33, than in three years leading up to it. 4) It stayed with me— it has been months since I've beaten the game, yet I still keep thinking about the story. I still listen to the music, and I still watch videos about interesting theories, video essays etc. Not just that, but my fascination isn't waning (I just bought a second copy of the game here on gog, that's how strong my passion still is). So if you're reading this review to figure out if you should give this game a shot— you should. There is no other game worth giving a shot to if not this one.

Im a man of my word

This is 100% is my game of the year 2025. I bought it on a whim on steam and it single handedly warped my entire favorite games list. It is now my second favorite game of all time and would easily be my number 1 if i split up (my current #1) FF 14 into its individual expansions. I begged for a port on GoG so this master piece can be immortalized in some shape or form and I would buy it day one without question. Its absolutely a must play if you love RPGs in any shape or form. Story was masterfully done. Combat while turn based has the Mario RPG(s) combat system where you getting hit is 100% your fault. Music will instantly draw you in and stay in your head after you turn off the game. Characters feel human, not one character is perfect, every single one has thoughts feelings and goals beyond what the story brought them together. They fight, cry, laugh and feel flawed. this is by far is a 10/10 game that everyone should at least try, you will walk away adoring the game or at least understanding why people love this game. Just buy it. For those that come after.

Undisputed GOTY 2025

I saw the trailers for this one before it came out, then months later it was on gamepass I figured il play a few hours. After 3-4 hours I was hooked, beat the game in 5 or 6 weeks, every boss except 1 beaten. Fantastic game, will make you love games again. I was skeptical about the turn based aspect, but the way they did it made it fun & innovative. Day 1 buy on GOG release easy. Don't read any spoilers, story is 10/10, graphics 10/10, gameplay 9.5/10

One of the best RPGs ever created!!

If you've ever loved JRPGs, or if you fell out of love for turned based RPGs, I implore you to give this one a chance. I don't think I've fell in love with an RPG to this level since Final Fantasy 6. The story line was engaging, the presentation was immaculate, and the game play was superb. If you think this is the normal take your turn gameplay that you're used to experiencing in these type of RPGs, you are going to catch a rude awakening. This game keeps you engaged in the battle from start to finish and that to me is truly what sets it apart from its predecessors. Clair Obscur is a game worth experiencing even if you're new to RPGs. I can't say there is anything like it and I certainly don't know if there will ever be anything like it again.
