Rather fun if you give it a chance

Let's discuss the elephant in the room first: the controls take some getting used to. Initially your movement is extremely limited; you can move forward at various speeds, pitch up and down and turn left/right. You can't strafe, roll (though there is a dodge roll), or move directly up or down, nor can you reverse. This is not Descent or Forsaken, and the first impression isn't great. Stick with it however and you soon get a different ship and acquire new Rites (movesets really) that give you more options. Very early on you get one that allows you to hold RMB to continue going in one direction while you can turn freely, and another to leap at enemy ships. The way that works is you target an enemy, hit a button, and teleport behind them. Again this takes some getting used to but once you do you'll find you don't really miss the regular strafing or vertical movement from the aforementioned older games. Story-wise, it's a tale of guilt and revenge. Maybe not the most original but it works well enough. I've seen some negative comments about the voice acting and don't quite understand them; Nara (the player character) can sound a bit dramatic at times but for someone carrying the burden of guilt of killing an entire planet and its population I think it's understandable. Graphically it's pretty impressive both out in space and in interior locations. I have no idea what kind of budget this game had but considering the price tag I reckon it's punching well above its weight in that regard. Sound and music are fine, neither really stands out whether positively or negatively. All in all it's quite a fun game and I'm glad I stuck with it despite the somewhat underwhelming first impression due to the limited movement early on. It's an arcade space shooter with a moveset that is rather limited at first but quickly turns into something quite unusual but powerful. Give it a try, and if after acquiring some Rites it still doesn't click you can always refund it.

Great Game

Bought this game on sale because I tought it would be a nice weekend-game. Then I played and it was so much more. This game was just awesome and I can really recommend buying it! I really liked the story and the flying just felt right. Sadly it's only flying in your space ship and I really wished there would be some parts on board of a space station or on other ships but still it was great fun. I hope this game gets a impoved sequel or a pre-sequel. I want more!

Space with 1 degree of freedom

The story starts off interesting. The graphics are fine. There's growth in the things you do, and the gear you equip. But I'm afraid I simply cannot get past a far future spaceship game where the fighter ships can't move sideways. Basically at all. Or vertically. You can make a 2 meter sideways dodge, but heavens help you if you've accidentally stuck yourself in a corner. Oh, right, there's no reverse either. Make that 0.5 DOF. You're going to have to turn however many degrees to the side (or vertically), move forward however far is necessary to get around the obstacle, spin BACK around the required amount, THEN go forward toward your destination. And if that sentence was tedious or difficult to read consider the cost of doing this many, many times during your play of this game. During chases and races, while exploring mazes, and in the middle of dogfights. Literally your only movement controls are forward (at 3 different speeds) and stop. Your plain ordinary human legs can do better than the hi-tech I-didn't-even-play-long-enough-to-learn-what fighter ship; what possessed these developers to offer 0 mobility laterally or even vertically in *space*?!?

Space magic and dogfights.

This is old school arcade dogfights with space magic powers. Yes, the story takes itself a bit too seriously but boy if I had fun with this. The demo gave me a horrible first impression because it throws you in the middle of the game without really explaining how to play or what's going on but the complete game is much better in that regard. The game is made to be played with a gamepad but there is partial HOTAS support (that's how I played it) up to four peripherals at the same time just be warned that the game doesn't deal well with mode knobs or other switches that send continuous presses and that interface buttons are fixed which means that if button 2 on your stick is the second stage of the trigger you won't be able to exit menus or refuse missions so you'll need to reach for the keyboard or just prioritize another peripheral for interface control (it's always the first listed in the options). Flight controls are completely remappable in the options and even have a few alternate bindings (dodges can be either bound to buttons or axes). The powers are loads of fun and if you do enough side missions you might end up extremely OP, teleporting behind your targets, shorting them out and then ramming them or use them as projectiles. The game has also enough checkpoints inside and between missions to allow even for people with no reflexes like me to have a chance. Just bear in mind: this is first and foremost a free roaming third person shooter, there is no trading or mining, it's just you and a bunch of enemies to shoot down in the context of a sci-fi b-movie about space wizards that yap about DESTINY and POTENTIAL while learning cool powers like teleporting. There are a couple of plot choices initially but by and large the story is linear. I ended up finishing it 100% with full achievements, it's not perfect but I had a blast.

Strong start but then...

The game start out strong and it's very fun the first few hours, but the more you play the worse it gets. Story it's somewhat ok, nothing special, interesting at first but poorely executed. The main problem is the gameplay, and the bad decisions taken by the desing team: at first you are dog fighting with your enemies and it is fun!, but few ours in, and you start unlocking "powers" called rites, that mark the start of the downward spiral. The more powers you unlock the less fun you get from the game, few examples: powers now let you teleport behind enemies cutting out all the fun of manouvring to put your figher behind enemy trails, then you unlock thunder bolts that not only remove enemies shields, rendering the use of specific weaponry useless (laser guns), but also stun them! basically all dog-fighting is out of the window, and so on and on. I'm buffled by those decisions. It was good at first, but then the fun was sucked out of it by the game itself, I played 11h and was near the end, but got too bored to even finish it.
