Chernobylite is a Science Fiction Survival Horror RPG from developers Farm 51. Set in the hyper-realistic, 3D scanned wasteland of Chernobyl’s exclusion zone, you’ll take on the role of Igor, a physicist and ex-employee of the Chernobyl Power Plant, returning to Pripyat to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his fiancee, 30 years prior.
Compete with the hostile military presence, other stalkers and supernatural creatures, as well as the harsh and unforgiving environment in your search to uncover the truth.
Get ready for a thrilling adventure of survival, conspiracy, horror, love, and obsession
Can you survive your fears?
Base Building & Crafting
Construct a base from which to plan your daily operations and excursions. Utilise workstations to craft gadgets, create traps and weapons or modify existing equipment to your needs.
Resource & Team Management
Companions are key to your survival and the resolution of your journey. Each day requires the careful planning and assignment of resources and tasks to your comrades.
Stealth, Survival & Combat
Survival in the Zone is not easy, and each day brings fresh challenges as comrades die and supplies diminish. Avoid detection with stealth takedowns or engage in open armed. Danger lurks in every corner.
Non-Linear Storytelling & Strategy
No playthrough is the same. Like your choices, the story is in your hands. Choose wisely whether to trust your comrades or not, use resources for survival or research, and confront conflicts or evade them. The future is up to you.
The game definitely has potential, especially in terms of its atmosphere. But in its current state, it is poorly optimized (I meet the recommended system requirements and I am nowhere near 60 fps on medium), little content (they say 8 hours, but only a couple guns), and they advertise exploration but there is not much you can do.
Not worth a buy for now, maybe down the road.
What doesn't work:
- Unrealistic and arbitrary time limit on missions
- puts pressure
- breaks immersion
- breaks learning experience where you need to make mistakes and try again
- Annoying save system
- single slot auto-save at unclear locations
- cannot learn and try again
- frustrating
- Not an open world exploration game
- random invisible walls you cannot pass
- lots of "fences" to block you artificially, super annoying
- nice "world map" from base window
- move to locations with magic portal gun
- Combat elements are terrible
- are random soldiers enemies or are we meeting them?
- magic "camouflage" indicators that tell you you are seen, emies are hard to spot othewise
- you cannot pick up machine guns everyone has, you have a 6-shooter gun
- combat feels super-unpolished, should we avoid enemies, should we shoot everone?
This game is unsure what it wants to be. It's not an exploration game because it runs you down with clock and silly soldiers in small, cramped and dense areas. It's not a combat game because it feels terrible to fight anything. It's not a building game because you need to tediously collect resources in those timed missions. The story might be interesting but I never got far enough to know more.
Perhaps those are just early, pre-release mistakes but it doesn't feel good as a game at all. The basic mechanics is tedious, annoying and frustrating.
... with a dash of Metal Gear: Survive
Definitely a work in progress. Good visuals. Audio and writing could use some work. Dialog is quite cheesy and there are some issues with translation.
Performance will hopefully be optimized. My older laptop (GTX970M) runs at about 35FPS in medium settings and freezes occasionally.
Fairly cool concept, base building adds some novelty to it. Will keep an eye on updates
The game is an obvious interpretation/iteration of the STALKER franchise. Therefore, temper your expectations and keep an open mind.
Similarities:
* Chernobyl location: landmarks, musty bunkers, shady tunnels, secret labs and Soviet posters
* The essence of the stalker profession/mentality/behavior/'gopnikhood'
* Atmosphere: better than STALKER due to being much more recent, realistic and impressive graphically
* FPS, inventory management & weapon customization
Differences:
* Day-based exporation over several smaller maps instead of the free-roam in STALKER
* Better storytelling: no exposition!
* Murky morality: NPCs are presented from several biased viewpoints, obscuring the villains and saints. The player can also act like a psycho
* Well-defined NPCs: each has a decent backstory and a set of opinions
* Heavy branching with consequences and revisiting of prior decisions
* Team morale management: much more impactful and time consuming than one could think!
* Base building: lots of manufacturing machines, air/radiation/electricity generators
* No humor - everybody is goal-oriented. No guitars, campfires or atrocious jokes
* No bugs or crashes
Unique points:
* Innovative editing of story decisions: enables building an alternate reality with desired outcomes
* Realistic representation of chunks of contemporary Chernobyl - detailed and nostalgic
* A separate stat for mental stress caused by killing - such a simple idea!
* Color commentary from the NPCs is quite interesting
Negatives:
* The game's AA grade is clearly visible if one becomes bored and starts poking at things
* The English voiceovers are hit-or-miss: the main character is voiced like a funny British professor (aka Monty Python), which stands out like a sore thumb in this depressing world
* Combat is uninspiring. Wonky stealth, certain superpowered tactics
* Horror is superfluous in this game - it is dark as it is
In total, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it
Just finished the game, and enjoyed it all the way!
The game is set in Chernobyl, years after the accident at the power plant.
You are quickly introduced to a varity of enemies and the harsh enviroment.
There is a base-build-management type of system, just like in Fallout 4 and it works flawlessly!
You have companions that you can send out on "mini-missions" to gather ressources.
You can choose to sneak, or "Rambo" your way through the game.
Story is captivating and keeps you invested in the game - you wanna know more and more.
There is no time-limit. Take your time and enjoy the ride.
