Long-awaited, but technically disappoint
Loved it, but bad port...
After years of waiting for *Chaos;Head Noah* to finally get an official PC release, I went all in and completed every route and ending on the GOG version (with the Committee of Zero patch). And honestly… I came out feeling pretty disappointed.
Let me get this out of the way first:
the story itself is still amazing. The atmosphere, the paranoia, the way the routes unfold—it’s all as strong as ever. That part absolutely lives up to the hype.
But the port? That’s where things fall apart.
Throughout my playthrough I ran into a bunch of issues that really shouldn’t be there in an official release like this:
* Crashes at specific points in the story, even when playing normally (not even abusing skip).
* The skip function being unreliable—sometimes causing instability or straight up crashes.
* The game marking text as “already read” when I definitely hadn’t read it yet, which completely messes with replaying routes.
* Achievement bugs (I finished Rimi’s route and didn’t even get the achievement).
* General inconsistencies with the script, even with the patch installed.
And that’s the most frustrating part: these aren’t minor issues. They directly affect how you’re supposed to play a visual novel—replaying routes, skipping read text, going for all endings.
One thing that really stood out to me is that this port clearly uses the same engine as *Chaos;Child* (you can tell from the menus and button mapping). The weird part is that *Chaos;Child* runs just fine, which makes these issues in *Chaos;Head Noah* even more frustrating. It shows that the engine itself isn’t the problem—it’s how this port was handled.
What really stings is that this was a long-awaited release for fans. This wasn’t just another port. It was supposed to be *the* way to experience *Chaos;Head Noah* on PC.
Instead, it feels rough around the edges in ways it really shouldn’t.
Ironically, older and less “official” ways of playing the game felt more stable in the most basic sense: you could actually go through routes without the game breaking on you.
The Committee of Zero patch definitely helps, but:
* it shouldn’t be required just to get a stable experience
* and even with it, things still aren’t perfect
So yeah, I’m left with mixed feelings:
As a story: absolutely worth it.
As an official PC port: kind of a letdown.
If you’re a fan, you’ll probably play it anyway. Just be aware that the technical side might get in the way more than it should.
After all these years… I honestly expected better.
