Winner of Best Indie Game at the 2024 New York Game Awards and nominated multiple times at other ceremonies including The Game Awards and the BAFTA, Chants of Sennaar is a critically-acclaimed puzzle and adventure game developed by Rundisc.

Divided since the dawn of time, the Peoples of the Tower no longer speak to each other, isolated by fear or mistrust. It is said that one day, a Traveler will find the wisdom to break down the walls and restore the balance. Travel the endless steps of a prodigious labyrinth, uncover the truth and unveil the mysteries of this fascinating universe where ancient languages are both the lock and the key.

Inspired by the myth of Babel, discover an enigmatic and vast tower. As the Traveler, delve into a world full of mysteries, where Peoples have grown distant, unable to communicate with each other anymore. Begin your adventure in a prodigious tower inhabited by five distinct Peoples, observe, listen, and strive to mend the bonds of distrust.

With a smart gameplay system, explore and solve various puzzles to uncover the mysteries of five different interconnected languages. Always guided by your trusty notebook, note each symbol, keep track of your surroundings, engage in conversations with people and unravel the meaning of every glyph. Each step will pave your way to the top of the Tower as each word will restore the link between People.

Dive into an enthralling and colorful world full of secrets. Tumble headlong into a beautiful world inspired by impactful European comics authors where every floor of the Tower possesses its own visual identity, supported by distinctive technological levels, architecture and culture. Embark on a poetic and enchanting journey driven by a soul-stirring, lyrical soundtrack, made by Thomas Brunet.

Minimalist, but in a good way.

A note regarding the softlock mentioned in many reviews: as of this writing, the bug is still present, and stopped my own playthrough at first, but a dev has responded to the GOG forum thread providing a manual fix until the game is officially updated. The game is very minimalist, in both graghics and story, but that is in no way a bad thing. The graphics are clean and bright with a distinct look to each of the regions you explore. The game, by design, primarily uses environmental storytelling, with very little exposition. The majority of your time is spent deciphering each of the multiple languages present in the game, in order to understand its denizens and the tower. The puzzles are logical, with solutions that require context and observation, and never seem to have "moon logic" solutions. Progress is usually steady, and the game clearly lets you know when you're making progress without too much handholding. Long story short, if you like logic puzzles, this may be up your alley. Finished in about 9 1/2 hours with 100% completion and achievements.

Short nice indie language puzzler

This game is a lovely 8-10 hour game with puzzles mostly about languages. Positives: The different languages in the game and the ways their grammar work is very intuitive and interesting. The puzzles required some thinking, but it was never too contrived. The graphics are generally good, but simple. Negative: -Needs some way to speed up some (repeated) animations. The simplicity of the graphics limits how interesting areas look when you walk through them more than once. -Needs a map. Every screen is unique, but getting lost can still happen easily. If you want to backtrack, you'll probably run around a lot in the (as mentioned previously) too simplistic areas. -Most puzzles where information from a different screen is needed, there are notes. This will not happen every time and you might have to write things down / screenshot / look up a guide. -The game includes more than one language and you'll focus on one language for about 2 hours at a time with few reuses. Some of these reuses need you to remember the grammar/etc. of that concrete language. As i have played this game over more than a singular session (as is probably standard in a 8-10 hour game), this was a bit frustrating, as the notes rarely include sentences. TL;DR: This game is good, but could have some QoL changes, probably slightly shortening the game.

Ciritical bug means wasted hours of play

Going great until it just goes to a black screen when leaving one area - music still plays, but the mouse pointer stays disabled and keys are unresponsibe. There's no way to roll back the save game to an earlier point, so that's the end of that.

Intriguing for What It is

I'm fascinated by linguistics, and the process by which people acquire language, so this is right up my alley. I really appreciate how the developers anticipated players' actions (or inaction...or lack of attentiveness) and provided a means to replay NPC actions and dialogue in case they missed it the first time around. There is also a fair amount of foreshadowing for some of the more obscure puzles (which, in most cases, you won't even realize until after you've encountered the puzzle, but still). My four gripes with the game are: 1) a lot of thepuzzles can be solved by simply rotating each element systematically until you get the right combination (think of the Eagle/Snake/Whale steles in Skyrim)...although, in some cases, that would require 64 (or 512, in one case) combinations to try; 2) some of the drawings that go with the symbol you're trying to decipher are really off (for example, SPOILER: I already knew what the symbol for "pot" was, and there was a slot in the translation book that showed hands on a pot...but it would not accept the symbol for "pot". Turns out, they wanted you to put the symbol for "make" there, as it was a drawing showing someone MAKING a pot; the drawing really should not have shown the entire pot, and better yet, just shown hands with motion arrows); 3) the geographical layout is really hard to nail down; I've played this three hours, and—except for a courtyard with a stele having symbols on it that tell you where you'll go if you head east, west, or north (and yes, you have to translate the symbols, but that's the cool part)—I really cannot get a grasp of how the different locations are connected; and finally, 4) You can't choose to save the game whenever you want; you either have to trigger an auto save, or use the one save kiosk in the whole game (which doesn't even tell you it saves the game!). Still, overall, a good experience I'd recommend if you like feeling like a master translator!
