The art looks amazing and the story looks promising, but despite pushing myself to play this for several hours, gameplay and story failed to hook me in. The RPG mechanics look interesting but every encounter I played trough had obvious weakness and there wasn't much tactical thinking needed on my part. Story, while shaping up to be interesting, really lacks proper pacing at the start, and just as I start getting invested, the game switches to a new character with their own introduction sequence, and then to another, and another, and another...
Such an amazing JRPG! Loved it! Played it 100% on SteamDeck.
(+) Runs flawlessly on SteamDeck
(+) Absolutely bonkers story and I'm here for it!
(+) Very interesting and engaging combat system
(+) TONS of secrets and unlockables
(+) I enjoyed the writing. I heard a lot of bad things regarding it but I didn't really found it to be bad. I actually laughed out loud sometimes.
(+) Stellar pacing. Things always keep moving and the length of the game felt just right.
(+) Tons of Easter eggs and references.
(0) The soundtrack was good but didn't really stick with me.
(0) There isn't much customization in terms of builds for the party but it works alright considering the gameplay structure.
(0) Gorgeous artwork and visuals but for some reason I couldn't gel with it. I know it's a me thing tho.
(-) Sky armors battles are interesting but I ended up not enjoy it at all
(-) Crystal mechanics are bad. At least I could ignore it for the most part.
(-) I felt the beginning of the game was harder and then it became a cakewalk - played on normal tho.
(-) The optional characters contribute so little to the story that it made me sad. Tomke is great and deserved more spotlight.
(-) Not all characters and stories work. Not a detriment overall but some sections bored me.
The title says it all. A love letter to classic JRPGs and the brainchild of (mostly) one developer.
Combat:
- Chrono Trigger + modern design/QoL (e.g. healing after battle so you can go all out)
- Overdrive system heavily limiting, often forcing useless actions to prevent unwanted outcomes
- Character balance mixed; a few characters are clearly superior and much of character customization is a false choice. Too many extra party characters in the second half that you'll never generally use.
- Sky Armor combat is a very different beast and personal preference.
Story:
- Multifaceted, deep, engaging, many plot twists
- Complexity works against it sometimes (especially with how many threads are left open at the end)
- Character development is fantastic, including side characters, even if a few aren't given enough screentime for my liking.
- Pacing is mixed, mostly due to the opening quarter being so slow
- Ending is mixed depending on who you ask. I found it logical and satisfying, but someone paying less attention to characters may be unsatisfied.
World:
- Fun to explore and giant
- Sky Armors are awesome for returning to explore old areas
- "Dungeons" feel like 'linear mazes'
Music/Artwork:
- Music is phenomenal, one step down from the greats like Xenoblade Chronicles
- Artwork is detailed, crisp, and well-animated. Zero complaints.
Gaming References:
- The way the game pays homage to the classics feels mixed
- The catchphrase of a certain character is directly copied from another character
- Many key phrases and concepts critical to the plot are directly copied from other games
- A major driving plot point is directly copied from a well known anime
- The game overall feels less unique due to these things, but it also helps establish a solid foundation for the game by not trying to reinvent the wheel.
