Caves of Qud

Love the game, been playing the game on and off since 2017. Enjoyable fantasy roguelike As for steam mods... even though I also have a steam version I have never installed mods... really don't care about them. As for the devs they had the decency to move my humble bundle copy form there to gog when they stopped supporting HB. So no problems there :)

I've found this game to be quite time consuming for little reward. I explored a cave, got to the end, got swarmed and died. I really that's the point of a roguelike, but usually they do not feel so onerous in getting basic stuff done. Part of this is due to the controls. They are jank. They predominantly rely on arrow or numberpad movement, and also mouse clicks. It's so frustrating; we have wasd as movement so a mouse can easily be used in the right hand. You can customise controls though. However, everytime you want to pick something up two keys need to be pressed, then each item needs to be highlighted individually and clicked on, then clicked on again to pick up. It's just a deadweight in getting stuff done. And then you die. This could probably be fixed with modding but it seems that cannot be done on the GOG version. I regret this purchase.

the RPG mechanics are at levels rarely seen in any other game. Every move must be carefully considered and you must never underestimate the enemy or the environmental dangers. For the first playthrough, I recommend the RPG mode where you can save the checkpoint in the settlements. Losing everything in the rogulike mode, after many hours of play, is not exactly exciting. Maybe try that mode for a later playthrough, after you have gained experience. The graphics are very naive but fascinating and the music is wonderful

A traditional roguelike with great atmosphere, a really cool and unique setting and very deep gameplay that is still more accessible than most of the other games in the genre. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys roguelikes, open-world games, post-apocalyptic narratives, theorycrafting character builds, deciphering obscure lore and the aesthetics of stuff like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Adventure Time and Gamma World.
