I love it. No, seriously, there is a lot to say about this game, but it's best for anyone to try it for themselves. It's fun, it's long enough, yet short enough to stop before you even think about getting bored.
It's not an actual "reverse horror", but still makes you feel like an alien creep which kills anything in reach within underground complex. Overall story isn't completely finished, and it's hard to undertake everything it reveals, but still - are we here for the story?
No. We're here to make pity humans squeal.
I love the concept, the animation is beautiful, the lighting and destructible objects are amazing, the sound is immersive, even the story is tight, especially for a video game. My only complaint is that I wish there was more... once you get fully upgraded you wish the game wasn't over so quickly. Here's hoping for an expansion pack with more levels!
The graphics are great. The pixel art look beautifull, blood and debris spreads nicely around the environment. The creatue looks like a chaotic mess, just how it should be. I have no complaints in that department.
The game starts with a very interesting premise, you are the monster. It's not a horror game in the sense that the game is going to scare you, instead you take the role of the scary monster. It's more horror themed, than an anctual horror game. But that way the game fullfills a very unique niche.
The game is a metroidvania, so the game has it's fair share of backtracking. Backtracking can be annoying, espiecally since you don't have a map. But I didn't get lost very much and movement is fluid and fast enough that it didn't bother me. You just have to focus on what potential paths open up to you, with the help of your new abilitys.
On the subject of these abilitys. They're great. Diverse, interesting because of their biological nature, usefull for traversal and combat. There are not tons of them, but nicely paste through the length of the game. And the anticipation of what ability comes next, made exploring and finding them very fun.
And having to balance your size to be able to use certain abilitys is also a neat idea. It's another thing to manage, and you don't get overwhelmed with 10 different abilitys to use at any given time. You can also just throw stuff at people, that works to.
I enjoyed the balancing. You get very powerfull, but you are a glass cannon. Sometimes stealth is the better option.
I definitely want to see more. My biggest complaint is, that the game isn't long enough. Don't get me wrong, it is worth the money, that's not what I mean. I just want more.
Recommended, would buy a sequel.
I had a great time with Carrion. The gameplay suits the base conceit with a movement scheme that's different but still very enjoyable, it fits playing as an otherworldly parasitic monstrosity very well. The enemies are made dangerous through their use of technology being mere fragile humans so the game will be more about outsmarting them than it is about outfighting them.
The only flaws could be the short duration (I personally liked it, it didn't oustay its welcome, it was the perfect length for me but your mileage may vary) and the map design:
Usually in a game like this, slowly uncovering the map and understanding it more and more is part of the fun, but in this case, in part due to the "teleportation" at the start of each level, it's incredibly hard to get a good sense of the overall map (and of course as a weird monstrosity, you don't have a map in game). I was never stuck for too long because they did a relatively good job at pushing you toward the next objective, but I never felt like I progressed because I knew where I was going but rather because the game led me in the right direction.
Bought it, played for about 2,5 hours, and I really like it, beeing the horrormonster in a facility and eating people who don't expect getting sucked into an airvent and eaten by me :D Major downside is, there is no map, so after some time it becomes a bit hard to keep track of where to go, because you have to backtrack quite a bit with new abilities
...but now I have to play it all again, because the game froze on the second start and deleted all my progress, all saves are gone, cloud saves too....damn....
