This game needs a map, its that simple, the enviroment is just to confused and bland put together to keep any sense of direction, in the very unfun way of just going in circles and circles, there is to few secrets and few optional paths that actually makes a difference.
Nice art and sound, killing very stupid generic npc´s is a bit boring.

Carrion delivers a great twist on the metroid-vania style. My main complaints are mostly with the content. The gameplay is solid. The game would benefit from an expansion that adds longevity to the game and more to the mysterious story episodes.
The smaller maps get a bit frustrating with all the loadings between levels when trying to go fast and it lacks a bit of impact in the end game.
Short review : Carrion is a great, well thought game that is instantly fun and will make you feel great. If you like ramming pedestrians in GTA, you'll probably like this game.
------
I got Carrion after seeing its trailer during one of the many videogames conferences last year because it looked amazing and fun, playing this blob of sentient flesh spreading chaos and destruction on its path : it feels exactly like that playing the game.
Great sensations moving using tentacles, it feels & works great. The visuals are superb, whether it is the environment, the dismembering effects splattering blood all around or the monster itself. Same thing for the audio, the screams, the crushing sounds, the music, the ambient noise, everything makes you feel like the eldricht beast you're playing, roaming in the darkness, waiting for the innocent scientist to get in the range of your tentacles.
Being so powerful does not mean you can freely go as you want, you sometimes have to take your time to survive. It's a perfect balance of chaotic fun, wrecking havoc and difficulty so you don't feel like whatever you're doing, it would have been the same. The puzzles you encounter are rather nice as well, and never feel like a drag.
As other people said, I understand that it wouldn't make sense for a monster to look at map but as you progress in the game, not knowing where you have to go became increasingly tiring, : man, I just wanted to split some dude in half. Easy 5-stars
You play as a monster. You slaughter humans using a mix of guile and brute force. You eat them to regenerate health and to grow bigger and stronger, and you make your way through the levels using all your abilities to chomp on humans and solve puzzles.
If this sounds appealing to you, this game is is going to be great fun. The game is pretty engaging throughout its fairly short campaign. The fights never feel dull or unfair. The puzzles tickle your brain just enough to be challenging but are never difficult to the point of slowing you down too much. I don't really like the pixel-y art, but even with my taste it looks pretty decent, and the soundtrack is quite good as well.
My main point of criticsm is the lacklustre AI. These guys can definitely tear you to pieces, but they're also quite dumb. They respond to you in the most rudimentary ways. If they have a gun, they'll shoot you if they see you. If they don't, they'll scream and run away. But they never act like humans. They don't try to flush you out of hiding, they don't call their buddies to help. They never try to trap you. They don't hide. Each NPC has their own patrol pattern and they stick to it regardless of what happens. The fights can still get quite challenging due to their sheer firepower, but they could be so much more. I would've also liked for the game world to be easier to navigate (it's fine if you don't have a map but why not add signage?) and dull voice acting. It'd be much more fun to tear people to pieces if you could hear them panick, call for help, beg for their lives etc.
Anyway, as the title says, it's great for what it is. A modest game, with a modest runtime and a modest price tag, especially on sale. I enjoyed my time with it, and I think you will too if the first paragraph sounds appealing to you.
I hope someone makes a Triple A version of this, with 3D graphics, more varied voice acting, and great AI. It would be great.
Title says it all. It's super short so I'd recommend getting it on sale. But it's an amazing horror game that I think everyone should play. Spent the 8 hours to 100% it.
