Had a blast with this game - the concept, visuals, sound etc are all great. However I feel it should let you fast travel at the end of the game - backtracking is a nightmare for finding the things I missed and there isn't a map or anything
In this game, you play the monster. And what monster: hideous, bloody, tentacles, etc. :)
Good points: it's fun and intense.
On the other hand, it's short (3~5 hours), and you can easily be lost.
IMHO, for 20$, it's completely worth it.
I hope the developers will made a second episode expanding the concept :)
There's almost only good things about this game:
The visuals are wonderful, the complex looks nice and atmospheric and is varied enough to keep interesting.
The story is just as atmospheric.
The controls are very pleasing. The monster follows your mouse and it creates a feeling for moving as a flowing mass and combat is made to work around this.
The abilities cover 60s - 80s scifi highlights and each one makes you really happy to have found it.
And finally the game runs perfect on Linux, that alone is worth a star.
The music isn't bad but it's minimal. It serves the atmosphere, so this is a neutral point.
There's some minor faults though:
Even doing everything, the game will take no more than 8 hours. The project is good though, so I happily support it with 20€, but I'd just as happily played another 6 hours.
The game could be a tad more difficult. There's a few rooms you have to tackle 3 or 4 times, but most are a challenge that only requires that you don't make a serious mistake.
There is too much about without any gameplay challenge. Because of the atmosphere, this isn't annoying, but even nice filler is filler.
There is a very cool side story in the game, which could have been expanded on much more.
So what's in there is good, there just could be more of it. For a first project by what's basically a two people studio, this game, even if not perfect, is an absolute gem. If the pictures look good to you, buy it, so there'll be a second part. It holds up to its promises.
Basically a big love letter to media such as THE THING, but you play as the monster. Tearing through the humans is tons of fun, and the metroidvania aspect is interesting. It's all done with ZERO dialog, it's all monster fun all the way (except some shifting gameplay which last minutes).
Difficulty is pretty well balanced, so it's never too easy or too hard. This goes for both combat and the puzzles (which sometimes overlap).
Visuals and music are on point. Love the retraux look, and the music is SPOT ON for the creepy factor. Flawless in this department.
Only things I would say are a con, it's a bit easy to get lost. There's no map in the game, and some areas look way too similar to each other. Embarassing to admit this, but I got pretty lost at one part in the beginning.
The other point is just how short it is. 4-5 hours and it's all over. No NG+, beating the game just unlocks the demo. Woo? Wish there was some challange modes or something.
This game is cool as heck, and I wish it had more. It's short, but sweet. I'd recommend waiting on a deal, really.
Loved it! Fantastic animations and a great concept. I finally get to embrace the vile, tentacled bio-terror inside me!
Love how the game wears it's Thing, Alien, Abyss inspirations on it's many tentacled sleeves.
Only a few criticisms. Mainly: Not having a map can be really frustrating, especially when you're trying to collect all the extra abilities.
Second main complaint: The controls aren't always great. I tried with both a controller as well as mouse/keyboard and, though I preferred the mouse controls, neither was perfect. The controller was harder to grab and swing things with accuracy, and the mouse would end up sending my abomination in the wrong direction on occasion, sometimes to my death. Really would have preferred being able to control the monster with the WASD and aim it's appendages with the mouse as an option at least.
Finally: It's pretty short. A first time playthrough took about 5 1/2 hours. Not much longer to 100%. Maybe there will be an expansion/dlc or a sequel in the near future because it seems the game is doing pretty well. Only time will tell.
