Needs Mods to really shine.

Most reviews have covered the good and bad points of the game. It is still in many ways ahead of it's time even now, look at the tactical combat compared to the latest Civ games for example. Still it can't be said enough, you need the fan mods for this game as they fix the bugs Activision never fixed and improve on most aspects of the game. Go to the Apolyton website and forums and look for the Call To Power 2 section. I think a couple of people are still working on the mods and what you can download there for free really improves this game about 100%. CivIV(+BTS expansion) with the FFH2 mod etc is probably on balance the best 'Civ' type game, but this old game is still pretty good, and still handles a few things better.

Good ideas, some problems.

A number of good ideas, hampered by some problems. In particular, it's worth mentioning both how doing away with the workers instead using the "public works" slider is downright awesome, but also worth mentioning that the AI is very poor, even by the standards, of, say, Alpha Centauri, which is something of a contemporary.

Just another 4X. Has its technical problems

Well, I am biased because most 4X games simply look bland in comparison with the original first Civilization. I think only MoO caught my attention for longer. Anyway, here we just have more of the same typical 4X stuff, just with a bit annoying quirks in control and interface. Maybe it wasn't that annoying back on release, now it is, especially if you have comparison even with FreeCiv. The only nice mechanic is the unit stacking. And of course the resolution issue. Yes, you can set your screen even to 4k but it will look crappy (the gfx won't upscale so you'll have almost whole world on your screen at once and everything will be very small) and for the movies the game "switches" to another resolution but the effect is simply not there - the videos are playing somewhere off-screen. Nothing to write home about.

Have to pass I guess!

I bought this when it first came out..the enemy AI was passive and not much of a challenge.....Activision said they wouldn't patch it so I quit playing....Maybe there's a mod that will make it better?

Fun and Addicting

Call to Power was a surprise for me, I never played it and only had experience with newer Civ games(Civ 3&4) but I bought Call to Power on impulse at a sale, I tried the game but I ran into issues with music, mouse scrolling and mouse pointer graphics that put me off, the game then remained on my digital shelf until recently. Deciding to give the game another I looked for workarounds for the issues I was experiencing, the music was easy to fix but for the mouse issues I had to install a source code project that solved it and improved the game on many other aspects. Call to Power with the Apolyton Souce code project is an awesome experience, I lost track of time while playing and often I found myself promising that I would quit after just one more turn. I actually think the game deserves a 5/5 because it is an awesome single player experience, but multiplayer(Except for hotseat) isn't working with the mod and some players look forward for MP modes so this issues deserves to be noted hence the 4/5. Without the mod, due to some design flaws the game deserves a 3/5, If Network play worked on the Apolyton Source Code Project I'd gladly give this game a 5 out of 5.
