The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.
Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music, it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed!
You have the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.
Fight alongside Metal Gods--such as Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others--while rocking out to the most epic heavy metal soundtrack in video game history.
Your guitar is your weapon. Wield a demon-slaying, electricity-creating guitar and use the power of Metal to summon wild beasts into battle, buff your teammates, and melt faces!

I really wanted to like this game. I'm a rock fan but not really into heavy metal but I still was very interested in Brutal Legend. But......the camera. I don't usually have one feature or annoyance break a game for me but the camera is horrible. It spins around the character at the most inopportune times and the distance setting is just too damn close usually.
One of the developers on a Steam forum mentioned that they couldn't change it when they were porting it from console to PC so they were aware of the problem but just couldn't fix it. Or more likely, due to time/budget constraints couldn't get it done in time.
A shame, for me this game will always be a promise of what could have been.
The Good: As a fan of Jack Black this game drew my attention as soon as it was released years ago (though I only recently purchased it in 2016). After playing through the game I think the greatest aspect of it is the game's simplicity. It has a clear vision and is not trying to do too much. The writing is straightforward and solid, as are the characters. The graphics all have a consistent aesthetic, a combination of Saturday morning cartoon and heavy metal album cover art (which somehow brings my mind back around to Jack Black). That consistency will help the game to continue to age well graphically. And the gameplay is relatively straight forward, with room for strategists, button mashers, and experienced attack combo artists all in the same playthrough.
The Bad: In some of the more action-oriented parts of the game the camera was a real distraction. It wrenched itself away from your control at random times and otherwise did not move quite as you would expect. Sometimes that made it feel like I was wrestling with the game to control what was going on. But by far the worst aspect of this game (in connection with the camera problem) was controlling the car. It accelerated too quickly and turned too sluggishly to navigate the tight roads all over the world map. The smallest dip, bump, or rock in the terrain caused the car to get instantly stuck or would send it spinning wildly out of control. Luckily, for the most part, the car can be ignored. But there are some vehicle-combat focused parts of the game that were made almost impossible because of these problems.
The Verdict: A solid choice, even at full price. You can control your armies like a demonic general from above, or jump right in with your troops and join the party with your axe. The writing was humorous and full of charm. And skirmishes with AI opponents extend the replayability of this title after you finish the single-player game. I hope to see a sequel to this game someday.
One of Double Fine's classics. This game is an open world platformer with a few RTS stages. While this game is obviously incomplete, what is there is still a good game.
