After a long search for the original game, I finally found it on GOG and ended up purchasing.
However, was very disappointed to find that the original version only downloads as an exe file for Windows so I can't play it on my Mac.
Very disappointed.
The original game was one of the first games with context sensitive music: turn it on, and feel like a classic adventure movie with conspiracy, secrets, and verbal humor.
The remastered edition is great for those who already played the original, the new puzzles are just acceptable, but the background information about the story is quite nice.
The additional parts from the Director's cut only enhance the gameplay, the game is tense, good voice acting and solid puzzles, would highly recommend this classic adventure game.
A 3rd person Graphic adventure
I actually played this game years ago when it's still CD ROM format. Not finishing it because I'm super confused with a puzzle but I still loving it so much. Here I am playing the remastered version, it's still the best, but as older gamer, I noticed a lot of cons along with pros.
pros:
Amazing artworks, both the original and the added on remastered stuff
Enough puzzle and stuff we can click on, but not overwhelming to us
Also there's no pixel hunting, always a huge plus
The note system helped so much in dealing with some complex puzzles
Great characters with amazing voice acting and great dialogues
Puzzles are well made, with few exceptions
cons:
The story is not the best. Sure the premise was interesting but the writing is kinda amateur-ish, the dialogues were pretty good though
Since I'm older, I noticed a lot of plotholes
The remastered/extra version felt tacked on. Also they kinda ruined it a bit by adding a slide puzzle (a sin in P&C adventure game)
I guess this is budgetary, but why not making new animation for the cutscenes? The old animation wasn't smooth at all (how about remaster it again in 2020s? I'm willing to pay, I love this game)
So yeah, that's my review, one of many that mounted heaps of praises for this game.
I love adventure games. I have played most of the greats, this is NOT one of them. I'd sooner replay Gabriel Knight 2 for the 4th time rather than play this game once. Still entirely bored and uninterested by chapter 3, so I gave up. Don't let all the hype and overblown reviews fool you like they did me. Play Gabriel Knight, Zork, Tex Murphy, Gemini Rue, Resonance, Uru, Last Express, The Longest Journey, and practically any other adventure game before going to these.
