I bought the original back in '96 when it released and played it on a 486-based desktop PC when I was 12yrs old.
Now I'm playing through it with my own kids and they are just as captivated by it as I was on the original stock game.
The director's cut version is absolute icing on an already awesome cake though too!
Playing through the same game with added content I can't stress how awesome this is since decades later I remember portions but with new content it's absolutely mind blowing.
Thank you guys for putting this together,
Broken Sword on GoG is the best version to get since it also comes with a download of the original version which in my opinion is superior until they release the remaster.
Broken Sword is a story of the unlikely hero who gets sucked into an evil conspiracy with a mystery hundreds of years in the making. It has great characters, great voice acting, wonderful art style and great music.
I began playing Broken Sword as a child with the Demo version of BS2. As I got older I eventually beat it and bought the full version of BS 1 and 2 on "Sold-Out-Games" which existed before GoG.
The opening scene grabs you from the start and never lets go. They changed this in the Director's Cut which is one of many reasons I don't recommend that version.
The story is very elaborate and borrows heavily from the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail - which also inspired Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. There's even some French history thrown in, and alltogether shapes the image of that this could actually happen - it's very well done!
The game never drags, and every location has its memorable characters. My favourite is probably towards the end when we come to a new location to unravel yet another piece of the puzzle and are introduced to an elderly woman who becomes part of a final adventure.
The story and characters makes this soon to be 30 year old game timeless. Soon we will have a 4k remaster which definitely will become the "go to version" of Broken Sword, but for now - and for sake of history get this version!
It's usually for sale for around $1 which is an absolute steal!
From the little bit I've played, the Director's cut probably wouldn't be worth it by itself. But! The purchase comes with the original game, which is ScummVM compatible, so I can play it anywhere.
And the original game is amazing! I didn't think I'd like it too much because I'm not a huge adventure games fan anymore, but wow!
I love the game, in-depth content. I learned where the term "assassins" come from! The main protagonist Nico is very attractive, with her beautiful french accent. I wonder who is the voice actress for her? Must also be pretty, I guess/assume... Though the man who is the voice actor for george sounds alot like american actor Brent Spiner. Overall the game is fantasic especially since I got it for free with the 6 million games downloaded event! Thanks!
Okay, I reiterate that I'm no good at adventure games. I played a bit of the original after reading some other reviews on here. True, the atmosphere is much different, but after a while, Win7 issues and the general adventure game problem ("what the heck do I do?") came about. So I set this aside and a few weeks later, I decided to try the director's cut. Yes, I know built-in hints hinder the "eureka factor" but the varying degree of hints made me feel like I wasn't a complete moron. You get a little bit more of the story which diminishes the twists a lot. But George and Nico's story kept me playing until the end and I didn't have to quit to look up a walkthrough.
