Still very good.

A great game that spawned a great sequel and... some other ones. The added scenes in the Director's Cut are welcome, and flesh out the story a little, but the new sections at the beginning of the game where you play as Nico feel a little padded with unnecessary puzzles to extend the playtime. Ironically, a few things that were in the original game are missing here, like some pieces of dialogue and an option that used to result in a death and game over. Nothing very significant is gone though, much more has been added than has been lost, and some things were cut for good reason, so it's not a problem unless you're a purist. The Director's Cut has the same graphics, resolution and sound quality as the original, but newly recorded lines are of higher quality; which actually makes the rest of the sound much more jarring, as the old lines of dialogue are very low quality in comparison. For those who aren't familiar with the game at all... Well, two things make a good adventure game: story and puzzles. On the story side, it's a globe-trotting kind of adventure about finding ancient clues, exploring ruins and mausoleums, uncovering murder plots, and a little bit of magic and mysticism. Although it sounds quite serious, it's actually a pretty vibrant and light-hearted game with some good humour and exaggerated characters. Overall it's pretty grounded though, and rarely laugh-out-loud funny. The story makes me think of a mix between Indiana Jones and The Da Vinci Code. On the puzzle side, it doesn't indulge too much in the typical "adventure game logic", puzzles usually make sense (with a few exceptions), and you don't have to roleplay MacGyver that much (again, with a few exceptions). So overall, great. Not every puzzle is entertaining though, and some are a little obtuse or long-winded. I almost forgot to mention the music. I love the music in this game! Very atmospheric soundtrack, kind of minimalistic but soothing, and always fits well with the scene.

How to make a classic into total trash

This is an atrocity. It feels like a completely different game. And a bad one. The story has been changed, scenes added and removed, the voice acting is -censored-, not helping is the absence of sound engineering with dialogues mixed from different recordings oh so obviously; even the music sounds horrible for some reason. The reworked art reminds me of those prefabs everyone added to adverts in the era of Clippy. Even the intro, oh, the intro. And let's not even start with the technical aspects of the game, like "fullscreen" being devoid of any resolution settings, simply being a maximized borderless window with a horrible, blurry, upscale from the original 640x480. FFmpeg has better upscaling and it's real-time (which, honestly, this probably is, too, it would explain why it's so bad). Obviously nobody bothered to retouch the art, they simply added more where needed so new scenes have background that is sharp while the original sprites are upscaled and seem like they actually have some jpeg artifacts in "fullscreen", in scenes where they added some comparatively high-res videos in corners of the screen, at least three layers of incompatible pictures, resolution-wise, are clearly visible. You can actually get the original if you download it separately by going to goodies/extras section - for some reason, it's not included in the game download. I suggest those who want to find out why so many people loved Broken Sword to ignore the main content and only focus on the extras. 1 star for DC, +1 star for GOG's "packaging" (inclusion of the original).

Not bad, but not great.

I played through the whole remastered version, and it wasn't terrible, but I'm not sure I can recommend it wholeheartedly. The ending of the story could have been a lot better, and it was sorely lacking an in-game hint system since quite a few of the puzzles were really opaque. It should be noted that since this is an old game, this is more the style for older games so it may not necessarily be a failing of this particular game as it was a problem of the industry that later games improved on. It was entertaining and, barring the cheesy and mildly confusing ending, the story built up very nicely.
