I think the biggest problem with Serpent's Curse is the plot. It should be more serious and darker. Less jokes and unnecessary conversations. Also, I really miss what was in the first BS, bad decisions cause death. This series should stay with point click but also evolve into some action adventures events.
I have returnerd to this series after 20 years and my feelings are mixed to be honest. Dialogs are witty, characters are charming and the game looks good, but large number of absurd puzzles really hurt my brain. After seeing solutions to problems you will ask yourself if developers of Broken Sword 5 are from the same planet as you.
After very disappointng BS3 ( and slightly less disappointing BS4 ) 5th instalment in series is finaly a return to form for Revolution Softwere, a classic point & click adventure.
Again Gorge and Nico will embark upon adventure with potencialy world-ending consequences, and meet plenty of quirky characters, both new and old. And it is a decently long game, for me it took 9 and half hours to beat, wich for P&C is not that bad of a milage.
There even will be run in with Strobbart's bane, the goat :) . Twice :D
So wht not 5 stars ? Well, 2 things, graphics and puzzels.
Backgrounds are beautifull, but characters themselfs are just 3d models painted up to look like classic hand drawn. It's especialy visible in rather limited number of animations, for example if you show other character item, game will never show it in Gorge/Nico hand.
And puzzles, core of any adventure game, are most of the time, rather simple. It's not nesesary a huge drawback, but if you want to be intelectually challenged, well, look somewhere else.
Broken Sword goes back to its roots and I couldn't be happier! Don't get me wrong, BS3's 3D world was great (not so much of a BS4 fan with its phone hacking puzzles...) but the game flows so much better without the generic block puzzles.
The puzzles feel well conceived and nothing feels like a complete shot in the dark. You'll have the classic 'OF COURSE!' moments but nothing that will have you cursing the game for being ridiculously convoluted.
In short, a well thought out point-and-click adventure.
The cliff hanger is set up well and I can't wait for episode 2. It's really a shame that the game was split in 2 episodes and that is my only real reason for 4/5 starting this game. Just as the story becomes really engaging you are left on a cliff hanger. I would of been happy waiting another month for the entire game BUT I digress!
This game, for me, is a welcomed addition to the series. If you're a fan of the originals then get this; you won't be disappointed.
Hint: Be sure to turn the old school Broken Sword text on in the option menu :)
I own this on Steam.
Its a great adventure. I think the beginning is confusing, but once you get further. It just hooks you in.
Once again, Revolution Software delivers a fantastic game!
