BROFORCE FOREVER

Broforce Forever, the long-awaited free update to 2015’s most patriotic video game, held back from freedom-loving gamers for a crime it didn’t commit, has promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade and unleashes a megaton of Kentucky-fried carnage into the face of evil.

The final update offers an improved and expanded campaign with new unlocks, along with six new ultra-patriotic bros, four new democracy-spreading challenge levels, and the ultimate expression of military might – bug fixes!

The best way for a returning player to enjoy this is to play through the entire campaign again. And again. Forever.

NEW BROS

Harness the calculating intelligence and acid-spitting allure of Seth Brondle, wield Xebro’s flying Chakram, serenade (and grenade) terrorism with the flamenco firebrand Desperabro, or become the thing monsters have nightmares about, a stake throwing, unholy purging, self-resurrecting teenage Slayer!

If sniping is more your style, famed bug hunter Bro Gummer brings pinpoint liberation with his trusty rifle, while Demolition Bro’s Freeze Grenades put evildoers right back where they belong… ON ICE.

NEW BADDIES

A Bro only becomes a force when confronted with those who seek to destroy their freedoms, and in Broforce Forever, the terrorists are even more determined to delete democracy. Motorbike Maniacs will try to run you down, while machine gun placements, barbed wire, sandbags and bazooka-laden blimps conspire to make each visit to occupied territory a very, very bad day at the broffice.

NEW CHALLENGES

Bros in search of even bigger battles can flex their muscles in new challenge levels known as Muscle Temples. Each campaign tasks Indiana Brones with navigating a perilous temple that features a new Threat Level and specific enemy types and hazards. Succeed and unlock one of four new flexes that can be deployed by any Bro, any time, any place. Just like freedom.

The fan service abounds in this one

Broforce is a campy send-up of many of the action movies of the '80s and '90s, with a healthy dollop of American patriotism on top that straddles the line between awesome and sly jabs at the same. The biggest attraction is the number of action movie stars you can recruit into your Broforce. If you can think of it, it's likely in here. So as not to give away some of the surprise, you start as "Rambro", and go from there, picking up characters that stand in for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, and even a few women like Ripley from the Alien movies. With "bro" in the name, of course. Each of the "bros" has different capabilities, from their speed, to how their shots behave, to even their melee and special moves. Playing around with each new one you rescue is probably the most fun in the game. The game itself is actually not what you'd expect. It's certainly frenetic, but it's not quite a Contra-style run-and-gun. See, each bro is very, very easy to kill, and you'll need to save more of them through each stage. And stages are packed with all sorts of hazards that will kill you... or your enemy. In fact, things are so destructible that the game actually feels like what you might get if you combined Contra and Worms (without the multi-directional fire, sadly). It's certainly unique, and much of the challenge hinges on finding efficient routes through the stage, and using the environment to wreak havoc on your enemy. Your bros are also rather tiny. It makes packing in detail on them tough, but at the same time, it maximizes the screen area for destructibility. And destroy you will; enemies will be gorily dismembered in many, many ways. It's a fairly puerile sense of humor, but it works for this game. Overall, it's a solid game, just don't expect a straight run-and-gun. It's more a puzzle-shooter, something that requires you to slow down and think a little bit to really be effective and reach the end. Give it a shot if that sounds appealing!

Really nice casual game

I loved it. I am having less and less time (and patience) to play long game sessions and I'm pivoting towards shorter games, or games that I can pick up for 20 or 30 min each day only. Also, I have never been really a fan of platform, sidescroller action games but after playing Hollow Knight and getting the itch, I am loving them more and more. This one is a great game. It's based on short sections that you will repeat a few times, and the variety of characters make it interesting and evolving, too. I consider it a good mix of repeating the level and discovering how to beat it with different strategies, and it makes for a nice game to play in 20 or 30 min sessions. Also, it ends before it gets boring, and has a nice progression where you unlock more and more characters which behave in different and interesting ways, but also harder enemies which require more planning beforehand. The multiplayer part, which the game seems to focus a bit on (local or online), I did not try it. I beat it on single player, so no problems on that part. 10/10 for me.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!

The Good: * COUCH CO OP! Games should never be played alone, and Broforce is an excellent example of co-op done right! * Huge line up of varied characters: There is a tonne of different characters, each with their own way to play. This game can be a simple run and gun, but there is also a lot of room to strategize based on the Bro you have. *Frantic bullet hell! A single shot can explode half the map through chain reactions! *Massive campaign with a near perfect learning curve: Starting from very simple levels, enemies and bros...as you continue playing things amp up into the almost ludicrous! *Level editor for unlimited Broforce! The Bad: *The graphics...It wouldn't have killed them to draw some ladder climbing animations, given how many ladders are in the game. Pixel art can be great, but it feels a little lazy in this. (Outside of the character introduction screens.) *The final act is waaaaaay too long! Going from a 3 levels then move on system to about 10 levels in a row, that SOMETIMES save where you're up to if you stop, is not great. *The save games aren't separate to each other: Starting a new campaign in a new save slot will continue unlocking Bros in both games, which is bad for the learning curve of starting with new friends, as you need time to get to know how each Bro works...not just start on level one trying to explain what 50 different characters can do. The Ugly: *Game breaking bug on the ridiculously hard final boss! I nearly gave this game 3 stars because of the final act being too long, too hard and the final boss stuffing up and having to start the last level again... But it was saved by the amazing ending! In conclusion, if you're a fan of a game that is Metal Slug meets Worms (with the graphics quality of the latter), this game is definitely for you! Just don't take it too seriously!

Online multiplayer down, no LAN?

As far as I can tell, then online multiplayer servers seem to be down or something. Really sad, given that there is no option for LAN or something like that.

Action Movie Bliss

Broforce crystalizes 80s/90s action movie mayhem into tongue in check jingoistic bro jokes and packages it as a fast paced platformer. The result is chaotic and very fun. Gameplay consists of platforming through pixelated environs with high destructibility which is sometimes unpredictable. Along the way, you rescue captive bros which unlock new playable characters. While the gameplay is ultimately a one trick pony, Broforce manages to keep it fresh through the vast variety of playable characters, each representing a well known action movie character. Each character has a unique playstyle and abilities which makes ploughing through the repetitive levels enjoyable. Haven't checked out the level editor but it does have one which you can use to make custom campaigns. The only reason I docked a star is because sometimes the action bogs the screen down in pixelated explosions and particle effects its hard to keep track of what's going on survive. While part of Broforce's charm, it gets old. I feel like if the game didn't use the retro pixel style this wouldn't be as big of an issue.
