BloodRayne: Terminal Cut Ultimate Update
Rayne’s debut game has gotten even better. This patch includes many updates that fans have been asking for such as mutants with their proper flesh color!
Update Features
  • Textures on enemy models have been restored to their original console version aesthetic
  • Japanese voice-acting and subtitles have been added
  • Additional rendering improvements to water and other textures
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes

Enhanced and updated for modern systems by the game's original developers, this is the definitive edition of BloodRayne.

In the years between the World Wars, Agent BloodRayne works as a killing machine for The Brimstone Society – a top secret fraternity that hunts down and destroys supernatural threats. Two missions, five years apart, turn out to be connected by one man. For years, this man has been searching the world for powerful occult relics to bring about a new age of domination for the Third Reich. In this frenetic and bloody third-person shooter that unleashed the iconic red-headed femme fatale on the world, the dhampir Rayne faces horrific creatures, hordes of soldiers with an array of tools and firepower, and every Nazi officer that stands between her and the one she must stop.

Features and enhancements of the Terminal Cut edition, created by the game’s original development team:
  • Support for higher display resolutions (up to 4K / 3840x2160).
  • Upscaled cinematic videos
  • Support for modern gamepads (XInput)
  • Improved rendering with up to 4x anti-aliasing
  • Support for higher texture resolutions, allowing for use of uncompressed original textures
  • Improvements to effects such as reflections, water, fog, and shadows

Decent but didn't I review this already?

Ah, no matter, at least I can adjust my previous score, where I guess I was a bit too lenient. It's one of those early 2000s games that piqued my 14-year-old self's interest mostly because it had boobs in it and you could rip Nazis apart with cool-looking arm blades. And honestly, that's like the only thing this game has going for it. Whoever came up with this idea was a genius because the main character's design is definitely eye-catching and the blood-soaked, Nazi-killing premise pretty much guaranteed that this is going to sell like hotcakes. But let's be real - the gameplay itself is pretty janky and not very good. Melee attacks and character animations feel stiff, shooting doesn't require any skill because it's all auto-aiming, and the platforming just plain sucks. Some sections of the game are also beyond frustrating unless you play it on easy. So, bottom line, it's neither a good brawler nor a particularly good shooter, and again, the only thing that kinda keeps you playing is the sheer, cathartic mayhem and nudity. And yet, somehow it always works because whenever I reinstall this thing, I will play it until I get bored of dying, but instead of deleting it from hard drive, I'll just put on some cheats and keep playing anyway. I honestly don't need the challenge with this type of game because the difficulty options are just broken and picking between Easy and Medium is like picking between "your grandma can play this" and "you will toss your computer out the window". And let me tell you, I never even bothered trying the Hard mode and I don't care. None of that matters though because if the game's premise sounds like something you'd be into then you've already decided whether you're gonna play it or not. And I guess there are worse games that you could be playing...

To be fair, it's pretty good

Because this is an old game I feel like I have to say that I have no experience with this game before the remastered version which I managed to play for half an hour about two years ago, before finishing it in one sitting. When you first start the game you will notice that the attacks feel light and the enemies have mild reactions to them making the combat system seem unfinished, but it gets somewhat better when you get used to it. Rayne also gets some upgrades throughout the game such as; new moves that increase your mobility, new guns to shoot with (dropped by enemies) and more melee combos. Thanks to these upgrades, there's some depth to the combat system that makes combat feel pretty good. The story is okey. It can feel a bit confusing at the beginning, but it gets better closer to the end. The length of the first playthrough is somewhere between 4-6 hours depending on how much you explore. Overall the game is okey/good depending on what you were expecting. If you can't appreciate the charm of older games, you may want to skip this one. Also this game has boob physics

A breath of fresh air

I'm my opinion it's great that they did this. Controls and screen resolution problems kept me from enjoying the game when I first bought it for PC a long time ago, and as a result I only played a bit. Now I can experience the entire thing fully upgraded to current standards. I don't think making a Remaster would have been possible, and given today's current political standards I wouldn't have wanted a Remake. As it is, we should all be thankful the original devs took the time to bring this back to life for all their fans and anyone else who wasn't but is curious to try it without the hassle

Shows its age

Great (for its time) presentation and a surprisingly engaging protagonist. Gameplay, however, is jank galore; melee combat is repetitive and messy, ranged combat is all over the place. The various abilities are good on paper, but don't amount to much in execution. The "dynamic acrobatic combat" advertised is hyperbole, to say the least. There is no structure or strategy to combat and the player has little control over it, outside of mashing buttons. More than that, the game's difficulty spike in the third act is insane and it is so, because there is no way it was playtested. There is blatant sloppiness in the third act that points to development time running out. It's a 6th gen game, which means it's a 6-hours-long campaign designed to fool teenage you into thinking it's longer, by making you repeat the same levels for a week straight. The lack of mid-level checkpoints only add to the frustration. This quasi-remaster should've addressed what is clearly broken design. It's tedious and boring. It's not terrible, but it's old in ways that don't hold up. I most certainly don't recommend it at the asking price and even on a sale, only pick it up with its sequel.

A good game to enjoy.

While I have to admit the combat system shows its age, it's still pretty enjoyable and this game became one of my most darling. It gave me some hard times with some enemies, but defeating them was satisfactory and Rayne, our protagonist, has an attitude that will make you like her in some way. She has become my favorite Femme Fatale. And to close my review. Killing nazis with a half vampire girl is awesome!
