Just...don't use the Sanctuary spell.
This is truly a game of its era: top-down RPG action, over-the-top depictions of anti-puritanical themes (thanks, Doom), full-motion cinematics, multi-colored lighting effects, excessive UI animation frames and "CD Quality" voice samples...Legacy of Kain really takes you back to gaming in 1996. Another big thing we shouldn't forget about gaming in the mid 90s is the experience of modern gaming in its infancy. I'm talking about finding holes in quality-of-life features. I'll get straight to the point: the first spell you acquire in this game, "Sanctuary," meant well as a means to escape hot situations in any dungeon and recover your health by teleporting you back to your home base. However, some dungeons were designed to block off sections of the level as you progress through it without being able to reset it. If you use Sanctuary in the middle of the dungeon, chances are you will get soft-locked out of progressing further when you make it back to the dungeon you just escaped from. Fortunately, the game can be enjoyed without using the spell at all (you will just have to grind your way back to health), so just remember to not use it and you'll be fine. Despite this design flaw, I still highly recommend buying this game. It is the beginning of a great series and was not previously available for purchase for quite some time (on Steam). It's like watching the Mad Max movies...you likely started watching the series with "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" but things are so much cooler if you go back and watch "Mad Max".

One Extremely
An extremely happy customer with this purchase. Used to play this game on Playstation and was so sad that I could not find a good copy anywhere. Until I found GOG. Now I am content, my favourite childhood game restored to me. Thank you GOG

5 stars in my heart, 4 stars because..
Im extremely happy this game is on GOG, its a fantastic game, truly an all time great! I was surprised to see that controllers work great, the dreaded load times of the PS1 version are gone, and you can map controller buttons. the reason i only give 4 stars are as followed: music in the game is not synced correctly, so after its loop is at the end there is a pause of silence then it starts up again. i noticed at some points in the game the voices are different from the PS1 version, maybe the PC version was always like this but when i got to the first blood fountain and heard the voice it sounded so weak compared to the PS1 voiceover (the blood of ages flows so sweet come drink from us) and if you pause or leave the cave and go back in the voiceover plays over and over even after you drank. I feel like the graphics were actually better on the PS1, maybe because it was more blurry, it would have been nice to see some filters and more graphics options in this port, but the fact i can run it at higher resolutions makes up for it at the same time. I did notice at one point i entered a room full of people and my new DS4 bluetooth started lagging, ill have to look into it further. i would have imagined this release fps would have been better, but hey the load times are gone at least. So at the end of the day im very happy to finally own this on PC, everything may not be perfect but its a true classic, i would highly advise getting it.

A Flawed Classic
Blood Omen is a top-down action-adventure game, where you'll play Kain, a wrongly kiled noble turned vampire. On your quest for vengeance, you'll visith various areas of Nosgoth, unlocking transformations, spells and weapons granting you access to previously inaccessible areas and secrets. The gameplay is clunky, and the design of various maps feels a bit of a chore to go through (long death gauntlets if you don't use the correct magic, a breeze if you are prepared). No matter what, however, several areas are a slog, so I'd recommend using the wolf speed to avoid combat when possible. The game has a lot of great ideas in the gameplay, but the execution is stiff. You'll have to constantly visit and re-visit menus to tweak your gear and magic selection every few minutes or waste utility items to avoid combat and speed up exploration. What redeems the game is that the ideas ARE interesting, and it's nice to unleash destruction upon your enemies when you can splurge (I recommend to be liberal with consumables, especially if you explore outside the main path). Some magic is particularly effective against certain enemies (for example, exploding the body of monsters which can come back when normally killed), and it's nice to explore those combinations. Melee is mostly awful, though (wonky hitboxes and possible stunlocks). The puzzles range from clever (rare) to busywork (often). The biggest draws are the story and the atmosphere. The plot starts straightforward, but it takes a few turns along the way. Our protagonist is a mostly evil, yet somehow charming vampire. His disdain managed to amuse me several times, and his voice acting is suitably theatrical for the drama that unfolds. The music gives off a desolate vibe, fitting the world you'll traverse. The world's lore is also fairly unique and interesting. The game can wear your patience, but if you learn to embrace it, it will reward you with a solid story and surprisingly clever ideas, while offering a unique mood.
