The Build Engine Game That Evaded Me

I have heard of this game before years ago, but it took me quite a while to actually get to it. I've played games like Doom 1 and 2, Duke Nukem 3D, OG Shadow Warrior, etc. before, but it seems Blood has some of the most satisfying gunplay/combat of it's type of FPS by default (What do we call these FPS games with 3D environments, but 2D objects/enemies/"viewmodels"/etc? Build-like?) The only thing that has even better gunplay that I can think of with this type of FPS, is Brutal Doom (which is a mod) and I guess Ion Fury (haven't played it yet) In short: Fun combat, likeable protagonist, it's got some humor and references, the game + it's expansion is about 8-10 hours long. Get it, you won't regret it.

Donate blood. Someone else's...

Absolutely awesome game that has been updated for modern systems without losing the feel of the original. I turned on all of the higher graphical options, but it still looked like the original game albeit at 1080p. That's a good thing in my opinion. Granted I haven't played the original Blood in a long, long time. This comes with the original in case you want to play it also. Not only that, but you have modern controller options that are super helpful if you want to play on your TV. Now as to the game itself, it is really challenging. I figured I was pretty good at games like this after beating games like Doom, Doom 2, Heretic and Hexen on the next to highest difficulty (Ultra-Violence, etc.), but this game put me in my place right away. I had to play on normal difficulty, ie Lightly Broiled, and was still being challenged quite a bit. Don't feel ashamed to lower the difficulty here unless you choose the lowest difficulty. The first episode is probably the most challenging of the non-expansion episodes, just so you know. The atmosphere is great as well, but make sure you turn on the CD music. It's really good and adds a new level of creepiness to the game. If you're in to the so-called boomer shooters, you need this game. It's one of the best hands down.

The worst way to play the best game.

Blood is the best of the Build games, and probably still my favourite game ever made, even after nearly 25 years. It has it all; gore, guns and dark humour. There's nothing quite like lobbing a lit aerosol can into a room full of cultists and watching them all run for their lives screaming as they catch alight. I could gush forever about Blood. ...However, considering this is the OFFICIAL re-release for modern systems, it's definitely not the best way to play Blood on modern systems. Missing sounds and effects, bugs and level glitches, unauthentic colour recreation, and a Blood that isn't quite Blood await in this version. Not to mention the completely bugged out multiplayer, which is a real shame. (co-op Blood is one of the finer points of life.) The KEX engine is okay, but definitely struggles to recreate what the build engine was putting out. GDXbuild was made by one guy in his spare time. Blood: Fresh Supply was made by a team of professionals, and they haven't treated the source with the same respect it deserves.

An eternal classic. I LIVE AGAIN

Upgraded visuals to get better resolutions with greater controls and better visual options. BLOOD is the ultimate build Engine game that simply will not die off as it gets older. They simply don't make games like these any more. Worth the purchase at full price.

I get motion sickness playing it

Not a bad game, but the graphics warp in a way that after about 30 mins. I start to feel like vomiting. So for me it's only playable in shorter bursts. Basically its a Doom clone FPS that emphasizes more on a melee weapon to save ammo for the guns. It has things Doom doesn't have like bombable walls. Its also like Duke Nukem in that the character has occasional one-liners. There are some very frustrating/unfair parts, but that's somewhat alleviated with the ability to save and load instantly with the press of buttons.
