I can still remember waiting for and getting this on launch day way back when. I still have the discs, and I still play this game on occasion.
Blitzkrieg really is a cool game, even with the balance issues (air support is pointless for the most part, and the sniper is like a demi-god running all over the map), and the satisfaction of leading your tanks into an enemy position and utterly crushing them is just amazing.
In addition, some missions require that you prepare to defend against enemy counter-attacks. That is a real blast, let me tell you!
It also includes a lot of historical info on WW2-era hardware, which is great for military buffs. One of the developer's goals was to be as accurate as possible on a lot of the ranges and power for weapons. While they did not succeed as well as they might have, it was a good try on their part.
TL;DR version of this review: Buy Blitzkrieg! You'll be glad you did...
I remember when I was a kid, I knew squat outside that my Dad was awesome, had a wealth of knowledge to share, and let me play on his computer.
I remember seeing this game as a kid and asking to play it myself, he only had to show me how to use the mouse and keyboard before I was completely enthralled by this game.
So many fond memories playing as the Germans, gave me my love of the Strategy Genre as a whole along with tanks and everything that goes into them.
If you love strategy you WILL love this game, if you love strategy it would be a disservice to you to NOT play this wonderful game.
I have played the sudden strike series way back but never played this game or series and still can not believe how amazing this game is for a 2003 game I believe it was WAY ahead of its time and still looks amazing even today 13 years later and plays truly great.
Down side I found is for me anyway on my windows 10 it tends to crash at random times so save frequently is my advice, you will know when it does as the sound is first thing that goes then it locks up, simply fixed by ctrl-alt-del and killing exe in task manager but don't save your game when it does as it kills the save game.
HOWEVER even with the only flaw of the game being the above I still couldn't stop playing it, I just sucked it up and kept on playing as it's way too good of a game to have the above put me off and be realistic its a 2003 games so the fact gog have even got it to run is in my opinion amazing so you just accept it this can happen with very old games.
To the game play well the missions are done in scenarios so to say so you can rush through each scenarios main mission as I did but its very hard or you can do the side missions to gain access to better troops like stronger tanks or heavy guns/artillery that make the main mission a little bit easier to deal with so defiantly worth doing. The side missions also give you experience to gain higher ranks so I found when you level up depending on which country you are you will go from say like 3 tanks to 6 tanks which is amazing or same but for artillery, you can only max up your player profile to what i seen lvl3 lets say but i never noticed any benefit of the 3rd level up so was bit disappointed.
Now about the difficulty, Easy is amazingly fun but don't knock it til you try as rolling your tanks through a town can still get you killed believe it or not, you will need to still use tactics to some degree. Normal is best to play this on if you want to get all the AI'S guns and use them against the AI which is so much fun to do e.g. you can end up with like 10-12 artillery guns going which is amazingly fun. Hard for me anyways was okay but real planning needed and scouting strongly advised although main mission real challenge. Insane level is hard with no saves and not worth it given the crashes issue above, for me hard felt to unrealistic but for anyone wanting super hard challenge then jump to that level immediately but be warned this game is hard to begin with or is what I found.
The supply trucks work so good, better then i thought it would and love how weather affects can stop you calling on your airforce and if you call a plane and weather degrades they go back to base but cool down time only refreshes to about 3 quarter of way so isn't too bad but yet another well done commander decision/timing from the player needed which is great.
I am nearly finished this game and defiantly buying from gog blitzkrieg 2 anthology, this game is defiantly worth the buy and time.
I had this game installed on my machine for more than 5 years. Most games only last a year at most. but this is a game I constantly found myself falling back on. It ran smoothly, looked good, and played well. It wasn't too difficult but still had those nice moments of challenge. Plus there was lots of info to read about the different battles and equipment! Classic!
Honestly, I cannot understand the praises of many people in here. I was searching for a good alternative of Sudden Strike 2 and Blitzkrieg seemed to be the way.
At first I was happy. The graphics are nice, the game allows you to receive better units by doing side-missions (I never minded that they repeat themselves) and the game did put a lot effort into historical accuracy, for example into armor and strength of the gun’s caliber.
Yet, as other people already mentioned, the game is too much focused on artillery. While in Sudden Strike 2 the supply trucks had to rebuild ammunition themselves on a legendary slow rate, making artillery useless, here you can level everything down and then send your tanks in for the rest. Well, at least if the enemy doesn’t have artillery. While in Sudden Strike 2 you were able to hear the enemy shots, in Blitzkrieg you only receive some orange circles on your map and these suggestions are only very vague, while at the same time the enemy shoots with a huge accuracy.
The main missions are bad. While in the side quests you have just a few tanks and soldiers, suddenly you are the commander of a huge army that already gets attacked from all sides, after just a few seconds. And forget your air reconnaissance because as soon as you send them the enemy sends fighters, not to mention his flaks that are all over the map. All you can do is use your tanks and artillery only and pause a lot of time to give commands, otherwise you WILL lose track of what is going on.
But the worst part is the infantry. It is completely useless! In Sudden Strike 2 your soldiers had bazookas and anti-tank rifles to be useful against vehicles and they were. In Blitzkrieg they are just pure cannon fodder for tanks, except the sniper who is a perfect scout. You cannot even take out the tank crew and capture the enemy tank, while in Sudden Strike 2 you could. So the infantry has no chance against tanks at all. They are useless, regardless of how you try to use them.
