Blade of Darkness

Here is the best description of just how much this game captivated me. I played a demo of it when I was young and from that moment I saved my pocket money until I could afford it. This was the longest I ever saved up for anything as a kid and even with a contribution towards it because of a birthday, it still took several months. When I finally got home with the box I started up the game and found out that there was a bug with my graphics card that caused the game to crash when I tried to save. This was before I had access to the internet so I never found a fix. I loved the game so much that I finished it despite not being able to save. There was no auto-save either so dying meant starting over from the beginning. Hours of gameplay could be lost in an instant because of a trap, a failed jump or an enemy that proved too much of a challenge. Now I got to play this masterpiece again. To enjoy the dark and lonely atmosphere. Learn and master the combat. Appreciate the luxury of being able to save.

I played this game, for the first time, way back in 2002, and let me tell you something... It remains my favorite PC game to date and sits in my Top 3 of all time across every genre! If you like Conan the Barbarian, Dark Souls, "Fighting Fantasy" and "Swords and Sorcery" book series, you'll feel right at home with this one. The level designs, Artwork, and Soundtrack, are absolutely Superb, which outclasses most, if not all, of what's being made today. This one was truly a labour of love by the developers, and a vastly overlooked Gem at launch. Hopely now, it will get the recognition and praise it rightfully deserves!

Just played the demo. Sure the graphics haven't aged well and the movement is still clunky, but does beating your opponent to death with his own arm ever get old? This gamer says "NO!"

Severance: Blade of Darkness is next to "Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic" another excellent game for real medieval Howard/Tolkien fantasy lovers without a worthy successor in sight for decades ... so sad. But at least you can enjoy the original with its grandiose atmosphere, awesome level design and very satisfying gameplay - which doesn't found on its pixel blood but on its authentic game world & its struggling inhabitants. Moreover Blade of Darkness' level overview map music gives you the ultimate spirit of adventure. Highly recommended !!!

This brings back great memories but it makes a difference when I'm no longer a kid wondering why it was so hard to kill enemies and why I kept getting lost. This is the king of game that rewards exploration, learning the complex but intuitive controls, and knowing how to deal with problems that often seem to far outclass you. It reminds me a lot of Rune but with multiple characters or Enclave but with more of an emphasis on your choices to determine what weapons you carry by what weapons you find in your travels and you choose which weapon skills to specialize in by earning experience instead of just gold. This game is dark thematically as well as visually: lots of dim corridors, barren wastelands and lonely temples. It also feels very brutal. You can die quick and the toughest enemy that leaves itself open will literally get carved into meat by your blade. GREAT FUN. Take the tutorial, have patience, and you'll have a lot to do, places to go, and monsters to slay.
