Good hack'n'slay game
I don't know why this is being compared to Dark Souls so much. There are not many similarities between the games. This is a hack n slay game with rather linear level structure like others of it's time (like Knights of the Temple, Rune, Die by the Sword, Enclave). The combat has the same formula: different attacks, blocking, evading. Compared to the others your movement in this game is a bit more restricted in combat and thus it feels a bit slower and i guess others would say more tactical. And yes, also compared to Dark Souls. Honestly i would compare the combat more to Gothic than anything else (i'm talking about the first Gothic when you had to ready your sword with Ctrl and then use the arrow key to swing it). Anyway, if you like any of those games i mentioned you will likely like this one as well. It's a good game.

Tis not a game, but a true adventure!
Severance: blade of darkness is what a call 'a specular oddity'. Let's start immediately by talking about the cons: a terrible fighting system, an atrocious camera, levels are confusing and, last but not least, story is a little cliché. And now the pros! An engaging, mind-blowing (for its time) and a pillar of the genre (of the Dark soul genre, people!) combat system, various option for the camera, level design is extremely well done, with intricate and multiple-paths maps and, last but not least, the story is told in a fascinating and well-done manner, where it is up to the player navigate further into secret areas in order to discover the truth... See what I mean when I say this game's an oddity? In my opinion, the game manages to be this good 'cuz it is not meant to be played as a 'normal' video game, but as an adventure, where every decision matters, doesn't matter which. Trust me, this is the first time playing this and at the start I was ready to abandon it, then when finally I dwell deep into the mountains or castles or what not, I found myself completely immerse in a true fantasy adventure, and not some third-grade button smashing Hero-almighty videogame. Here, the joy of playing is all about overcoming obstacles and using wits and tactics in order to win against the odds... Soooo, yes! totally in love with it (sure, it does have some bugs, so get used to have multiple saves) and cannot recommend it enough. Remember, it is not about the goal, it is about the jouney!

Ottimo RPG D'azione

Clunky and janky
A straightforward action-adventure game with simple RPG elements which looks pretty promising in the beginning but everything happen in clunky and slow way. The game controls are very clumsy and annoying. You cannot even move sideways unless you are locked onto an enemy. Switching between weapons and equipping them is slow and very problematic in the heat of combat. Most of your melee strikes won't hit anything because of short reach and poor hitboxes. After two or three melee hits your character is out of all stamina, and when that happens you are totally frozen and it takes a long time to recover. Enemies don't have that problem at all so they can spam their attacks. You can block attacks only by using a shield which will break very soon. You can also throw your equpped weapon at your enemies but most of the time it just flies over the enemy without causing any damage. Item pickup and object interaction is made unneccessary difficult. You have to manually browse through nearby items with a button press and after that you can pick up or interact. Sometimes you automatically drink a healing potion right away after picking it up, sometimes you store it in your inventory. Other annoying problems: campfires won't hurt enemies, archery is very inaccurate, there are not much methods to heal your character, there is no mouse cursor in the game menus and you have to make "are you sure" confirmation every single time you save and load. Not much good things to mention. The game has pretty good looking light and shadow effects, there are physical objects to interact with and enemies get sliced into peaces. And there are some nice little details, like the character turns his head towards a nearby item and wounds appear all over your body. And that's pretty much it.
