The story is, as several reviews had already said, good. The graphics is very nostalgic (which I liked a lot). The music goes so well with the background.
The one thing I appreciate most is that you wouldn't 'die'. This is very different from those old-schooled point-and-click adventure games. But the games in this bundle are really too short. Each game only took me around 1 to 2 hours to finish (so it's a total of about 8 hours to finish this bundle). For a game costs $14.99, I would expect a longer gaming time.
I bought the first Blackwell game on sale and didn't expect much out of it. And honestly, it wasn't a particularly long game, or terribly challenging. But it was fun. And I found myself thinking about the characters and premise for several weeks after. I came back and bought the rest and I really enjoyed the ride.
I don't know how much they planned from the outset, but the games really build on one another; characters reappear (sometimes with new revelations about their past actions) ideas of life and death build into recurring themes, the protagonists' bond deepens, locations come back, and the series naturally builds from a simple little one-off mystery game to a sequel with some callbacks to a series-spanning plot with the fate of millions in the balance.
This is a great point-and-click adventure game series that has a few small flaws, but nothing severe (for example, there is an interesting mechanic in the first game to combine your notes/clues to make new deductions, that disappears in the next game even though you still take notes, but then comes back in future games though it is never as informative or useful as it seemed in the first one). Many of the puzzles are of a good complexity level, neither terribly obvious nor impossible.
I recommend it for fans of the old late-80s, early-90s adventure games.
I got the Blackwell Bundle on discount, figured it was a lot of games at a very low price. The trailer really doesn't do it justice, I bought the game because it looked OK and I was in the mood for a point and click adventure but it really is one of the better ones.
It has everything you can ask for. Great voice acting, interesting story, interesting characters (the main two at least), pretty nice graphics (only problem is that they're 640x480) and the puzzles are clever but not crazy impossible as in some of these games.
I'll admit I had to look up a walkthrough twice in the game, but you really don't have to. It's one of those point and clicks where once you find the answer you feel stupid for not finding it out right away rather than thinking "How was I supposed to figure THAT out?!". Very rewarding.
I recently spent a relaxing weekend playing through all four of these games and absolutely fell in love with them.
If you are a fan of the old school point-and-click adventure genre, you should feel right at home playing the Blackwell series. Yes, the graphics from earlier games can feel a little dated now, but the great story and engaging characters still shine through.
I'd definitely recommend the series, and hope there are more to come in the future.
