Blackguards Special Edition

I enjoyed this game very much, a fun adventure, interesting characters, good combat and the god awful ending that ruined everything. You are forced into a chain of slow tedious battles where most of your heroes die and you are stuck with 1 or 2 heroes that have to smack the main, obviously, spell casting enemy that just drinks potions and heals itself just to prolong this unbearable slow and awful battle. How can the developers and QA look over this absolute atrocious part of this game? How can something so good be this bad at the very end? I was just hoping I could finish the battle before I uninstall this game, was greeted with a disappointing ending that resembles a child's first power-point presentation.

Im only a few hours in but so far it's been a surprisngly fun rpg. It has combat similar to a tactical rpg like the King's Bounty games kind of, with its own unique take on it (still Hex and Turn-Based though). But outside of combat it's also a full fledged rpg in its own right, not just a tactical rpg. Definitely worth the price all day and then some (pretty sure i got it for only a couple bucks or so) and would highly recomend to any RPG fan.

Great story. There are several options where what you say is important to a side quest - which way you go, which fight, or such. In any RPG where dice rolls dictate outcomes, there is randomness. Yes, it is possible to miss with an 85% chance to hit. You can miss several times in a row. That it is only the to hit, then a monster can dodge. Sure, sometimes you have to re-play a combat once or twice to win. You may even need to go off and do another quest, get better stuff or skills, and then come back. Pros: Great story, fun game, hours of adventure. If you like games like D&D IceWind Dale or Neverwinter nights, you may like this. Runs great on my laptop. Lots of options for advancement (not really level up, since there aren't class levels). Very few "classes" but lots of options. I give all non-melee characters a bow and skills in bow, yep, even magic casters. Very few options for items. Cons: Large install file (6.3GB download, 19GB on disk) compared to most on GOG, though standard these days. Very few options for items (pro and con). Note: If you are a D&D person, then note the lack of levels and the multiple characteristics that affect skills is different than D&D.

This game is tough rock. It will be challenging and requires thinking. It's very tight, meaning that won't be forgiving, and item and skills management are scarce and require focusing. The story is sort of meh, with interesting turns but quite ordinary. Side quests are interesting and almost compulsory if you want to develop your characters. I found one mission broken, only one, the one of the slaves caravan, despite completing it after talking to the merchant the conclusion didn't trigger. Recomended to install the dlc untold legends. Don't follow guides unless necessary, and save often. For hardcore RPG who like turn based strategy and are persistent enough to reach the end of it. I got Blackguards 2 too, but I'm satisfied with 1, and need some rest before going for it. Battlefleet gothic got in its way and I'll play it after i'm done with the W40K nice Armada RTS.

Blackguards as a whole is a well made game but with major issues that can make it very boring down the road. Story wise it is acceptable, the main story is cliche but not in a bad way and there are a lot of side quests which even though they don't affect anything in the world, apart from gaining xp/gold/items, help to flesh out the world that the game is established as well as the characters. Without giving any major spoiler, only major complaint is that the game throws a couple curve balls which leads you to lose characters you have invested in without any prior warning or indication, which happens in major plot turns. Graphics are well made and attack/magic animations well done but again the downside is that the non combat areas are basically static images and the equivalent of facebook games as far as how you interact with other characters. Other than that the game is composed of a series of battles in a hex shaped grid and follows a dnd style of approach of both levelling up and fighting. There can be a high degree of strategy involved which is refreshing, and your characters will be challenged all the way to the end. Basically very rarely you can just rush the enemy and most battlefields will have some kind of gimmick to exploit or be mindful of. That also makes the battles a little slower than most other games. The downside is that there is also a big luck factor involved since most actions are based on chance. Overall it is a good game if you like a string of combat encounters tied together by an average plot and character development and put together into a decent combat engine.
