Final visit to Black Mirror Castle

Black Mirror III plays out the final chapter of the Gordon family saga that began with the cult point&click adventure Black Mirror I. However the enjoyment of this title will heavily depend upon how you felt about Black Mirror II, since this third title borrows heavily from the previous one (same developer, story, voice actors, characters, graphics, user interface), with the main novelty being a part of the story where you get to play and switch between with two characters. I didn't particularly enjoy the final part of the story, felt it was a bit rushed and underwhelming but maybe it was just because I had started playing the series many years before and that created a burden on Black Mirror III that really wasn't the game's fault... still it does what a sequel should do (visiting old acquaintances and places while introducing some new faces and locations) and provides an ending to the saga. In conclusion, if you enjoyed the transition from the first title to Black Mirror II, then this one is a no-brainer. If you are unfamiliar with the series but like traditional point & click adventure games with a mysterious setting, you could give Black Mirror a try but it would be wiser to start from the beginning to get to know all the characters and events referenced in Black Mirror III.

Great sequel to Black Mirror II

TNGpt is spot on with his remarks about Black Mirror II: if you enjoyed it, you will enjoy the final instalment as well. I actually liked this game more than its predecessor, for various reasons. First, the overall narrative is different; much more grim and depressing. The protagonist is bitter, irritable, but not even a bit annoying or unsympathetic. I could empathise with him and this really drew me into the game. The overall style is still as gritty and gloomy as before, actually even more so, and fits the darker tone of the story better. Secondly, a great deal of lore is covered in this part and it answers many unanswered questions. This is particularly important for those that didn't like the abrupt ending of the first game. I found the closure satisfying. As the story progresses, there is noticeably more suspense and thrill. Thirdly, the second protagonist brings an interesting twist to the story and it's a likeable character. In the last part of the game you can switch between both characters to solve more elaborate puzzles and it makes the game a bit more challenging as a result (which is good!). Finally and most importantly, this game is about Black Mirror again: both the castle and the actual mirror. In Black Mirror II you entered the castle only briefly and the curse didn't become a part of the plot only until the reveal towards the end. This series is a very enjoyable and atmospheric point-and-click adventure and it kept me thinking for days after I finished it. I am not sure whether you have to play the other two games, as the game does a fairly decent job in explaining what happened. However, I think the series is particularly enjoyable if you do play the other games first, because you will get a sense of familiarity and become more curious about the story. That is also the negative part: the game has fewer readable content to satisfy a bigger appetite and makes the lore a bit more shallow. And unfortunately, the English voice acting could be better.

Deep and thrilling adventure game

I did not know the Black Mirror Trilogy to this day although I had heard a lot about BM3 mainly for the remaster of the first one. It is probably the best adventure game I have done to this day, in term of storyline, scenario and atmosphere. The scenario of the game is the deepest and most mature I have seen for a video game yet. Some elements reminded me of Broken Sword, Gabriel Knight, Alan Wake but with a much much more extended, deep and realistic touch in all aspects. The thematics of this third opus include esoterism, malediction, exorcism, mysticism with some paranormal elements progressively developed around a classic detective investigation plot. I must aknowledge that I had to use a walkthrough at several moments because I was stuck, and also because some phases of gameplay and puzzles are pretty hard. No spoiler here, but towards the end, there are some sequences I would never have solved by myself ! so regarding game duration I think this one can beat some records because yes it is quite long... It was also mainly because I was eager to know what was about to happen next, because the scenario is quite thrilling and keep you hooked. The actor voiceovers are the only drawback I can see, the acting is inequal at some moments, some lines are not convincing but overall it has not hindered the experience, and is offset by the astonishing amount of dialogs and text in this game...I don't know if I ever played a game with so much dialogs. Good point also for the music that is very well for the atmosphere, subtle yet present, and for the visuals...the places to visit in the game are really detailed and beautiful at the same time. Finally, welcome and useful features: the spacebar that highlights all the objects on screen. The double click to teleport the character that speeds up the progression. To conclude, i am eager to play the 2 other games of this trilogy because finding this gem has been a very good surprise.

A very atmospheric, gripping story

My favourite part of the trilogy. Highly atmospheric, good game design, wonderful music, an overall feeling of decay and a menacing darkness. As for all three BMs the end part is its weakness and a bit disappointing, but overall that's the epitome of BM for me. Very entertaining.

Better than a second part!

This one HAVE TO be played only after the second part of the trilogy, because it will make no sense at all to someone who's new to Black Mirror games. And it has a good, solid start! It picks up where previose game ends and goes on and on! But, unfortunately, there are some badly implemented puzzles closer to the end of the game. With strange logic and mechanics wich barely works and can easily be broken, things you can easily miss if you try to do them in your own order and etc. So it feels slightly less polished in the end. And it kinda spoils overall really solid impression this game gives. But still, this is a nice conclusion of the trilogy.
