Does an excellent job of capturing the gameplay and atmosphere of classic Revolution Software point and clickers but manages to show it off in a modern package.
The central plot is serious, but the light tone and cheery, colourful graphics keep the game fun throughout.
The puzzles are a bit on the easy side for experienced adventure gamers. I found them entertaining, but if you require the near-impossible, hardcore puzzles of some 80s adventure games you may be disappointed.
Nearing the end, the puzzling does get a bit watered down, and there's a visual novel vibe for a while, but not enough to deduct in my rating.
The interface works as it should, and while I was a little sceptical about how the 3D-but-hand-drawn look would actually work in practice, any doubts were quickly dispelled. It really does look fantastic.
The music score is similarly top notch.
Man, 26 years?! Whew! Alright so the game is very faithful to "Beneath A Steal Sky," Joey is as fun as ever, the plot is (disregarding some minor plot holes) pretty good, and the puzzles are pretty good despite like two of them being a little too abstract. Overall, I love this game as much as the original.
PS: The ending truly hurt me, this game has a VERY emotionally impactful ending that brought me, a 31 year old man, nearly to tears. This game is far from forgettable. However, if I had one major complaint, it is that the ending's mood was quickly shifted to a more possitive tone that felt a little abrupt.
Great game, be sure to play the original first as this game is less impactful without you first doing so; it's free and you have no reason not to!
Huge fan of puzzle solving games
What i like mostly about this title is it allows you to play this on a laptop despite the low specs it has. So it both looks good and also runs well. So i 100% recommend this to people who are fan of puzzle solving and adventure!
I'm a fan of Beneath a Steel Sky and I also liked Beyond a Steel Sky. Although I'm actually a very orthodox 2D point-and-click adventure enthusiast and normally can't stand 3D adventure games at all because I get spinning dizziness and nausea from them easily. However, this was not the case with Beyond a Stell Sky. Presumably because it is not an FFP game, but a well-programmed 3rd-person adventure game that avoids too hectic camera movements. The uncanny valley that I usually experience in many 3D games (especially adventure games) is also absent here, thanks to the graphic novel-like style.
So for me, the game is technically very good, if you have the necessary hardware. Although, of course, there are the occasional graphics glitches that exist in almost every 3D game.
How is the story: Quite good from my point of view. The cynical, post-apocalyptic and dystopian glossy world with a social caste system is portrayed well. Stylistically, like its predecessor, it can be classified as cyberpunk with a few steampunk elements. The story is coherent, although it didn't captivate me quite as much as the first part. Beneath a Steel Sky was bloodier, harder, darker, more unforgiving, more brutal and less suitable for children than Beyond a Steel Sky. But it was also a bit more thrilling and exciting. The puzzles in Beyond a Stell Sky are okay, perhaps a little easier than in the predecessor.
Overall, I can recommend the game. It's just a more pleasant, easier-to-digest fare than its predecessor.
Pro
* nice approach for a modern Adventure
* Graphics are cool
* talks are funny
* Autosave --> never lost more than a few minutes
* Metal things look incredible good
Con:
*Graphic glitches
* some Crashes
* some puzzels are too repetitive
Room for Improvement (my ideas for a better game):
* more places (I can think of some 5-6...)
* more stuff from BASS possible (Helicopter, Underground, e.g. build the Leek terminal with Link Stuff you find and need to collect) - the designers missed just some really good opportunities!
* City by night with lights?
* more Water, Plants, flying Robots... more action in the Background
Conclusion:
Good fun for a day off, wish the game would take 2 days...
Let us hope for an even better part 3... At least there is a small cliffhanger at the end :-)
