THE BROTHERHOOD has crafted a homage to adventure games from your childhood. BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION is a 2D isometric adventure set in the distant future. Explore a post-apocalyptic landscape, solve puzzles, meet new friends and make powerful enemies, mediate conflicts and fight for your life as you unravel the secrets of the world around you.
Mark, a man out of time, searches for his lost brother Don, in a far-flung futuristic era ruled by highly advanced technologies which are both revered and reviled. Your surroundings hold echoes of a desolate past, and glimpses of a dark future that has yet to be written by your actions. Be prepared to face many tough choices that will shape this land long after you complete your journey.
The inhabitants of this world will help and hinder you, as you make new discoveries and navigate the spectacular African-inspired landscape. Negotiate your passage with local leaders, healers and warriors, or find yourself embroiled in a battle against nanite swarms, enormous scorpions and rocket-equipped robots.
From thriving villages to crumbling cities, petrified forests and bone-dry ocean beds, this strange new world holds a multitude of terrains to uncover, beautifully rendered in 2D isometric art.

BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION is brought to you by THE BROTHERHOOD, the studio behind STASIS (Adventure game of the year 2015) and CAYNE.
Got the game as part of giveaway, so can't really complain.
+Beautiful sceneries
+Very good music
-Hard to navigate the sceneries. Not clear where you can go and can't. Objects to pick up not clear until you walk near them. Though richly detailed, enviroments lack interaction, few NPCs to talk to (making world building potential unused)
-Though you get many breathtaking environments, they feel empty
-Sometimes it's hard to know what to do next and how.
Loved it for the feel of Planescape Torment / old school Fallouts, the mechanics feel simplistic compared to them and at the same time, complications added only by unfortunate design choices. As a giveaway, thoroughly enjoyable. For a full price? Perhaps, look elsewhere.
The game looks amazing. But unfortunately that's all you can say about it: the gameplay is unpleasant, the puzzles are very basic, and navigation through the beautifully designed landscapes is a slog because it's unclear which parts are walkable and which aren't. Also, the story unfolds in a weirdly abrupt fashion. Pieces of information are strewn wildly into the landscape as "codex pages", with no motivation as to where they might come from. As an example, at the start there's a code entry field. You just happen to have a selection of three codes in your notebook. No explanation why or where they came from.
Save your money and time.
There are many things I like, most notably the voice acting, dialogue and characters are FANTASTIC.
However, what is a fairly interesting setting, is packaged inside a very boring game. There's simply nothing to do but to fly around looking for items and the right NPC to talk to.
If the aim of the game was to tell a story with great visuals and compelling characters, it would've been better to make it into a VN.
I didn't play much of the game because the gameplay is absolutely atrocious. You can't even see where you can and can't go, and it's not obvious from the drawings, so you just need to click randomly everywhere just to explore. Every area is way bigger than your screen and you have no reference (map or anything) to know if there's more to find. The puzzles seem at times completely arbitrary and you just need to randomly try stuff. With a lot of backtracking, very slow travel options etc, even if you like the story this is a huge waste of your time: play a better game.
The story is decent, the game is passable.
There is a lot of room for expanded dialogue and better interaction with the other PCs as well as the NPCs.
Some things remain somewhat unreasolved.
And the ending... well, that was extremely disappointing.
.
Leaves me not even understanding the purpose of the game or why the characters even exist.
