Beacon Pines is a cute and creepy adventure set within a mysterious book. You play as both the reader of the book and its main character, Luka.
Something strange is happening at the old warehouse, and Luka and his friends seem to be the only ones taking notice. Sneak out late, make new friends, uncover hidden truths, and collect words that will change the course of fate!
While helping Luka investigate the strange goings-on in Beacon Pines, you’ll collect special golden charms, each with a word engraved on it. These charms can be used at certain turning points in the story to fill in a blank word and drastically change everything that follows.
As the book's reader, you’ll navigate the story’s turning points using The Chronicle: an interactive story tree that branches and grows along with your choices. Exploring one set of events can unlock new charms to use on another branch, leading you to jump back and forth between entirely different versions of the story in order to unravel the mysteries at the heart of Beacon Pines.
As the description says, you play the part of both reader and main character, with the narrator being your guide though the story. The narrator makes the game twice as good as it would be otherwise - she injects so much emotion and feels into this story, it honestly feels like a family member reading a story to you in bed.
Bought this today and played all the way through in one sitting. Totes adorable.
I really love this mechanic where you can go directly to the branching choices and try another branch. I think a LOT more VNs could benefit from that. (This is not a VN, but the branching choices concept is similar, and handled here better than most.)
It's a good game, has a solid story and plot with interesting characters, plus the concept of different timelines adds a lot of good stuff to this game. I only have a few complaints that made the experience not as good as I would have hoped for it:
The gameplay itself is alright, it does the job for conveying the story well but it's basic at best.
There is also a lack of voice acting that I feel is lacking in this game, especially since it's so story driven.
Overall its a good game but compared to other games which are also story driven I think it deserves this rating.
The game is cute, the story is interesting, but in the end it's more like an interactive story than a game, there's no real gameplay. Also it has the horror tag, but it didn't really feel like horror at all, a lot of the bad things that happens are not even shown. Except for some of the .... coldest ones.
I think it would have been more interesting with a more gory aproach, would have really created an interesting gap with the cute art, but this is also fine.
Being a fan of choose your own adventure games, I especially liked the Charm mechanic. I would definitely recommend this game, I would highly recommended the games soundtrack as well. I wish that they would release a sequel.
