Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Use this to fix issues with Windows 10, play in higher resolutions and with a larger field of view:

In addition, use dgVoodoo for anisotropic filtering, anti-aliasing and VSync (fixes extremely high fps causing unnecessary system load). Looks really nice with these enhancements.
I haven't played a lot, yet, but so far it's really good, so I give four stars for now.
This is one of the best RTS games of all time. And I say this as someone who played it on release and dealt with several issues. The AI was incredibly bad in skirmish/custom games. A better tutorial could have been put in place for unit training - I remember this being mostly a guessing game as to what kind of unit you will make. And the most annoying issue I had, though this could be fixed, is your units will 95% of the time just do w/e they want during battle - micro management was non-existent. But the game is innovative, encourages aggressive/smart play and was pretty balanced, in my opinion, on release. Just the fact their are 4 races makes this very replay-able along with a multi-choice multi-outcome single player campaign that is pretty challenging I may add (however most of the challenge when I played it was fighting with bugs like the ones I mentioned before). I have not seen this issue mentioned in other reviews so it is likely cleared up.
I would also like to add I never had any clue an expansion was released for this until seeing it here so I cannot comment on that part of the game.
10$ is well worth it for anyone who has not experienced this. If you like RTS this is a must own. If you don't like RTS I am not as quick as other reviewers to persuade you to open your wallet. Be real, if you don't like RTS the innovations made in the genre are meaningless.
Ok we have all kinds of RTS games. We have ones where you just have a single building to build other buildings and out units. Then we have some games where you build workers and those build more buildings to pur out units.
But in this game you have to sacrifice some of your workforce to get an army. I never saw a game who does that.
In this game, you are rewarded to adapt a certain mindset. If you go and try to turtle your way to victory, you will get stomped by the superior units. The game rewards you with Yin and Yang points if your units fight away from your base. You use Yin Yang Points for unique upgrades and very special powers.
All 4 factions are quite alike, but they differ greatly in detail. Dragon and Snake are more like the basic factions. Wolf is an even more aggressive faction than the others. Lotus, my favorite, is also an agressive faction but they work more with magic.
You can scare your opponent in different ways and use intresting tactics. When you run through the woods with your units (notice: only when you run) you will shoo up birds and your opponent will be alarmed. When playing lotus, one of your heroes can summon rain and will call down lightning when attacking units. So your opponents will know, if it starts to rain, some unpleasant stuff is going to happen.
Use fire to give your enemies all kinds of problems. Does he want to save his village really quick? But that will cripple his economy for a few minutes.
I recommend this game to everyone who likes games like Warcraft 3. It is a _bit_ simillar, but totally different on the other hand.
Everyone should play this!
Battle Realms is a masterfully crafted real-time strategy game. Cosmetically it is very similar to Warcraft III. It's not quite as complex as Blizzard's offering, but it's got charm and it's got heart. Everything about Battle Realms is stylish, sleek, and cool. If you enjoy games with high production values and snazzy looks, this game delivers. But outside of the visuals, it's one of the best games ever made, period. It popped up in the enormous shadow of Warcraft III and hence was overlooked, but that shouldn't deter you from grabbing this one today. Peasants spawn in front of their huts and sit idly until you give them a task or send them to military buildings for training. Every military unit, with the exception of heroes and some special units, requires a worker to be trained. This adds a bit of realism to the game, having you raise an army from workers to battle-hungry warriors. The units in all four clans are unique, fun to use, and have their own personalities. This is a very creative take on Asian lore, fusing it with demons, magic, and creatures. It's like Mortal Kombat meets Diablo. Even up against today's RTS's, Battle Realms is challenging, creative, well paced, different, and most importantly, FUN. It is literally bursting at the seams with style and uniqueness and shouldn't be missed. This isn't your run-of-the-mill Warcraft clone, it's its own game and it's got its own way about the genre and it works really well. If you like RTS games, there is no reason not to have Battle Realms in your collection.
Whenever this game released, I had no idea about it until I saw it at a store and begged my dad to buy it for me around 2003. When I played the game, it wasnt like any RTS i have played before, the fact that you automatically generate peasants to gain resources and have to train them into warriors was entirely unique back in 2002.
What I like is that every unit has a unique ability so this game is all about micro managing and trying to see whats best for a certain situation. I really love this game and if youre looking for a great RTS title to play, please by all means, play this game! It is truly great!
