Battle Brothers is a turn based tactical RPG which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory?
The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.
Manage a medieval mercenary company in a procedurally generated open world.
Fight complex turn-based tactical battles with historical equipment and brutal injuries.
Permadeath. All characters that die in combat will stay dead – unless they return as the undead.
All characters come with their own background stories and traits. Want a stuttering ratcatcher, a greedy witch hunter or a drunkard disowned noble?
Character development without a restrictive class-system. Each character gains experience through combat, can level up and acquire powerful perks.
Equipment that matters. Different weapons grant unique skills – split shields with axes, stun enemies with maces, form a spearwall with spears or crush armor with a warhammer.
Diverse enemy roster. All enemies have unique equipment, skills and AI behavior.
A dynamic event system with atmospheric encounters and tough decisions outside of combat.
Three late game crises – a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge – add a looming threat.
Two full hours of orchestral soundtrack.
Overhype Studios is an independent game developer studio from Hamburg, Germany. We are devoted to making great games that we want to play ourselves. With Battle Brothers we thrive to reflect the creativity, complexity and originality from the old days when game developers where passionate gamers, not corporate businessmen. While doing this we took a lot of inspiration from some of best games out there: The original X-Com, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mount & Blade and Jagged Alliance.

I purchased this game because of a Steam review, where the person compared this to a turn-based Mount & Blade. That is the biggest lie I have ever encountered in a game review. I'm so grateful I caught this game at 50% off because it was a complete waste of money. The RNG is garbage! Of ALL the games I have ever played this game is the most brutally unfair. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I watched a low level bandit with a hatchet 1 shot my BLOCKING front-line Sergent (I was playing on easy mode btw). The percentage on that must have been near zero. That kind of thing happens all the time, regardless of well played strategies, and proper kitting of my group for the encounter. I'm so done with this game.
This game use to be incredibly fun in the beginning. The thought of running your own mercenary company taking contracts and making a name for yourself as you see your group: Grow, expand, die, retire. It all sounds cool right? Well in the beginning.
The biggest issue currently is how favoritism the game can play with the a.i. A lot of RNG bs going about in this game can leave players infurirated over how one-sided battles can get. Sure you are suppose to lose characters over time. But not every time. Especially if your just starting to play this game? Yeah that's fair. While there are tutorial battles and 'videos' those don't do much as RNG can and will play a factor. Which is why it is recommended you save CONSTANTLY and don't play ironman mode unless you are fully prepared.
The learning curve has way too much RNG!! The way to "git gooood" is for those who live to play games. Aka those who, have no life, say things like "git good", or think video games are only good based upon how challenging it is. Why can't the deves have a more customisable difficulty scale? Lessens the RNG headache!!
Have played this on someone else's PC.
Very basic tactical turn based combat, worse than the Heroes of Might and Magic games, which are much more playable. Overland movement is particularly bad, slow, and using a 'speed up' button that constantly resets, and still isn't fast enough. Missions aren't interesting and repetitive, and the graphics are bad - particularly for the combat units, they look like little Russian dolls.
It's baffling that this is a $30 game, perhaps $7 would be enough. Though it seems to be popular.
