Banished is a city building game where you control a group of exiled people who are restarting their
lives in the wilderness. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies
from their homeland.
The townspeople work, build, get older, have children, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy,
happy, and fed are essential to making a successful town grow. Any structure can be built at any
time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so.
There are many occupations that the people can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to
fishing, teaching, and healing. You can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry
for rock, and more!
Build a city with any layout you want with almost no restriction on when, what, and where you build.
Keep the population happy and healthy by providing them with food and warm shelter.
Watch the town grow as you assign 20 different jobs to build buildings, grow food, craft tools and clothing, and more!

The game is amazing, very entertaining and you'll love it if you like RTS games but it gets kind of boring after a while and it hasn't got any updates in time with having so much new things to add.
I bought this game during GOG's Insomniac sale, for only about five bucks. I figured it was going to be something like Sim City, but in a more medieval style world. It is not. It's SO much better. Comparing the game to Sim City is really quite wrong, because they tend not to have much depth. You put down buildings, so people can move in, so you can tax them, which gets more money, which lets you put down more buildings. The people's 'needs' never run deeper than them wanting a specific type of building set up.
Banished goes much, much deeper than that. If I had to compare it to anything, I would say it's closer to Dwarf Fortress, albeit a much easier and much more accessible version. You have individual citizens (or laborers), and the game keeps track of them. You can watch anyone grow from child to adult, watch them pass away of old age, watch them work their individual jobs. You don't directly control any of them, only assign duties, build homes and workplaces, and try to care for them, but ultimately they're the ones who have to do it, with you acting as overseer for the growing collection of cottages, trying to make it become a village, and then a town, and a city, as big and as long as possible.
There is no combat in Banished, and there are no monsters or enemies, aside from natural disasters such as disease, starvation, freezing, fires, tornados, and the like, which helps keep it laid back, but also allows you to focus on growth, and trying new things, new challenges. Can you have a thriving city with only fishermen providing food? Can you survive a winter using only firewood? Can you go without a school for smarter workers, a tavern for happy workers? Carefully managing food, herbs, wood, stone, coal, and iron requires a watchful eye (especially wood), which is the game's challenge. You can build on every inch of land on the map for a huge population, but you'll need room for resources. It's a relaxing but challenging and entertaining game. Buy it.
It's like the Developer has been listening to all my gripes about city builders and made exactly the game I want. I wish there was the option for battle BUT who knows what will come in the form of DLC or mods. Love it!
One of the most surprising games of 2014, Banished is a game about building a village for a bunch of ...banished people. Every building is available from the start so you will have to figure out on your own what works and what wil end in inevitable chaos. And in the first few attempts it WILL end in chaos, death and starvation. There is no combat, but you will fight the elements.
The game is challenging, the mechanics are extremely well polished and i've already had many dozens of hours of fun.
It wasn't released out as an early access title like so many small developers do and is a real finished product in a time where even AAA titles aren't even close to being this kind of a complete experience, this alone should make even non-strategy fans pick it up and reward this kind of development.
For fans of titles like the settlers, anno, simcity and tropico this is a must buy.
The fact that this is all done by one programmer is just mindblowing.
