Expand Your Story: Explore new areas, fight new monsters, and win new rewards in the Siege of Dragonspear expansion to Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Continue the adventure by exporting your game to Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Explore the Sword Coast: Venture through vibrant new hand-painted areas in the classic style of the original Baldur’s Gate
Gather Your Party: The original cast returns to kick butt for goodness - along with Neera, Rasaad, Dorn, and four new additions!
Extra Class: New items, quests, and a new class: the spirit-calling shaman!
Story Mode: A difficulty setting to allow players to experience all of the story with none of the Game Over screens
Legacy of Bhaal: A new extra-hard difficulty setting for experienced players.
Awful. Bad story that belongs in an Icewind Dale sequel (Belhifet? Really?). Completely unnecessary expansion from a studio that hasn't made anything original. Only upsides are that you can import a higher level character into BG2 and that you can just play the original. In fact, just play the original BG1 with the BG Tutu mod rather than the Enhanced Edition.
Honestly, the UI is so bad that it would take a few thousand words to address every issue. It's black and ugly (with little contrast). Pointless changes have been made to the layout, such as turning the journal into an overlay, and making it inaccessible from your character record or anywhere else except the game screen. Myriad changes were made without any reason. Custom portraits don't work properly anymore. But problems with design aesthetic don't end there. The new character portraits look like bad Photoshop work-overs of the classics. And even when you turn off the horrible sprites, the game screen is slightly blurry (I'm assuming this is due to attempts to smooth it out) and the character models seem wonky somehow. I feel like I'm wearing glasses with the wrong prescription.
But probably the worst part of all this is what the 2.0 patch does to BGEE and BG2EE. It applies the same, poor design choices to those games and turns them into buggy messes. I was a big fan of 1.3 : it looked great and the bugs were few, far between, and minor. The problem with Beamdog is that it took them too long to get to that 1.3 state. As they were a new company, I was willing to forgive them for this, and for some other creative choices I didn't agree with. But I can't forgive them for wrecking 1.3 after it took so long to get there. Hopefully they'll offer a 1.3 rollback for the many of us who are disgruntled.
I don't follow online drama so most of the stuff people complain about went over my head.
But, the fact that the story is deviantart-tier fanfiction, that 80% of the choices don't matter (Responses are typically "Yes", "Uh.. Yes" and "Yes with angst"), that the game is a buggy mess that somehow looks worse than the original, that the multiplayer is broken beyond belief, and that the devs are censoring the people they disagree with in forums and steam reviews (!) makes this a don't buy. Never buy.
I bought this mostly fueled by nostalgia and Im terribly disappointed.
Constant crashing and terrible writing make this a slog to play through. I don't care about writers putting their own political views into their writing, but when you choose to do so at the cost of any sort of nuance or by rewriting a previously established character (looking at you, Viconia) then you've lost me.
Even if I were to ignore the writing in this game, I can't ignore the technical and gameplay flow issues. Constant crashing, linear game design and areas that are essentially combat gauntlets with no way to resurrect characters make this a chore to get through.
AVOID.
The game isn't great, but it's not as bad as the top negative reviews would lead you to believe. I only rate it a 5 to balance out the 1s, neither of which it deserves.
I bought the game in spite of all the negative reviews, because I was more curious to see how out of proportion people were blowing these issues more than I was curious about seeing another Baldur's Gate installment.
For the most part regarding the people losing their minds over political issues, social justice and the trans character, I was right. Way blown out of proportion, mind bogglingly so. The trans character for example, is literally a side npc who brings this aspect of themselves up over the course of 3-4 dialogue boxes, one time.
The main problem with the game is that it bears the Baldur's Gate name. It would've been at least a solid 3.5/5 little infinity engine Icewind Dale-style game if it was its own story with its own characters.
The pacing and scale of the quest is just so out of place when you consider its place in the saga. You are fighting liches and dragons and devils and are literally drowning in unique magical loot. Everyone you do a little favour for rewards you with some sort of magic item, and every other rock you flip over has a magical artifact under it, it seemed. Felt like the "Why can't I hold all these limes" guy, but with magic items. Maybe some people enjoy this, but to me it felt like something that should be happening on the tail end of Throne of Bhaal.
The only other thing that annoyed me was inconsistent voice acting/recording quality. Some of it top tier, some of it guy in a basement with a WalMart mic tier.
Other than that, the environments and art in general were really nice, especially indoor areas. The music was great, especially the main theme. Great to hear the old voice actors. The linearity was actually welcome as a change of pace, and fits well between the super free roaming bg1 and 2.
The game is worth at least one playthrough for a bg fan.
