Enough drama, a solid expansion

haven't experienced any bugs myself, and my play-though has been smooth. Some people have meet bugs but few truly game-breaking ones I've seen, compared to some AAA games. This is no different, and for those that are getting bugs the reports I've read suggest most aren't experiencing game-breaking ones. And a patch is incoming. Mod are compatible in the majority of causes (have the people claiming this played this game at all?) and the modders are quickly dealing with any remaining problems. The UI is too dark for my tastes but otherwise I love the new changes and features, fully upgraded UI with nice extra features. Companions generally great so far, the continuing characters are true to their characterization (Safana as not be hijacked, she remains Safana but given more depth, same with Jaheira), lots of interaction, and making them interactive was very nice touch. Their dialogue and interaction is consistent and fine, with some quite well done. Companions were generally well done, on a par for the most part with the main games and much better than previous EE work, with more interaction and voicing, I'm really enjoying them. The maps lovely and atmosphere is good, the story seems fine and very BG to me, I've enjoyed the main quest, and sides range from a few okay, fine to some really good with surprising twists. The writing in fine to good. Came across 'controversial' minor npc who apparently jumps you with their transness and missed it completely, only realised afterwards, You have to really ask about their name, then press further to get anything. This was it, much ado about nothing I thought. Minsc line was ill-judged perhaps but one line, but this drama and review bombing is crazy (GGs are as mad as SJWs, just the same now) and has been removed. I swear self-offended drama is the problem with gaming these days. I wish both GGs/SJWs took their culture war elsewhere, I'm so sick of it/them. A solid addition to BG, I'm really having a blast.

Decent Interquel with just some lesser issues.

I played this game with the current patch that is out, so my experience will be different compared to others. I actually didn't come across any bugs (that were noticeable) when I first played this, and thoroughly enjoyed my uninterrupted experience. This review doesn't take into account of the controversy due to a certain writer during a very toxic time that was affecting a lot of the Entertainment Industry. I think a lot of these reviews I'm reading on here have clouded the reality concerning the quality of the game itself (aside from the bugs that has since been patched), and only because of that one major issue which I addressed. With that said. The Interquel is a interesting addition to the Baldur's Gate Series, and one filled with many things that is homage to the original game. It sets up a different tone where in the original game it was about exploration and the life of adventurer while trying to solve the mystery in regards to the plot. Here that is stripped away, and much more linear with a sense of urgency considering how the plot evolves into that. Though it works pretty well in many sections, but sometimes the player can easily miss optional content if he/she doesn't look in the right place. Though in a way I enjoy that aspect because that is what exploration should be about, but the game can unexpectedly lock you out of the area when you least expect it. (Fun fact if you use the cheat command to get back into the locked areas, and you'll find small but interesting content you would never normally see; I wonder what the devs had planned)? The final area and boss of this game was a pleasant surprise. There is actually one additional scene at the very end of the game, but requires a mod to turn it back on (the scene is used as a bridge for BG2 and that is all I will say on it). This game didn't really leave a bad taste in my mouth, and I believe the Beamdog Devs did very well despite the toxic circumstances.

Much better than expected

I am surprised by the amount of bad reviews here, which I can only assume are mostly from disgruntled old timers that oppose anything new. I really liked the expansion, not even only that, I think it was a lot better than the original Baldurs Gate in terms of story, presentation, dialogues.. and everything else really. I did not play Baldurs Gate 2 yet, so I can't judge how the story fits into the series, or if there are consistency issues or the like. But having played BG1 and then directly afterwards the expansion (which from the timeline of events definitely makes sense) I can say that it was very enjoyable. It did not feel at all like a fanfic mod as many others complained, in the contrary, the qualtity of the game seems a lot above the original BG1, which was just very barebones in terms of story and dialogues. Finally, in the expansion the companions come to life! The story is also very intriguing and how it was presented was amazing at times. The siege and many other moments were really really good. On the technical side, similarly to the base game I encountered no issues. So, having said that, if you plan to play through BG1+2 I definitely recommend to get this expansion. It is worth it!

I am a conservatist, can I play it?

Can you play Dragon Age? One look at top reviews, 'overall rating', and 'verified owners rating' tells you immediately this game stirred a controversy and was review bombed. Keeping to the game only, here's a recap; judge yourself: - A companion had a quip 'It's all about ethics in heroic adventuring', a play on a Gamer Gate slogan. *Not* a joke at their expense, mind you. It's since been removed. - A shopkeeper, if you decide to talk about them rather than just do business, will admit to being trans. 'Token' inclusivity, but not really forced, either. - There is a war going on, one location is filled with refugees. Thematic, nobody would blink if it didn't conicide with the refugee crysis in Europe (but must have been written earlier). - The game has a linear structure, without the semi-open exploration of BG and BG2. I can understand why people may not like it, but, personally, I found it hard to thematically justify side questing in BG2, given the pressure CHARNAME should feel to follow the plot. - It was buggy on release (what else is new?). I haven't seen any. Above all, though: this game was possible because a lot of people have a lot of nostalgia for BG. However, BG aged badly in so many ways, it's much easier to mention what aged brilliantly. If you want to play a game you remember BG being, not the game it was, pick one of its spiritual successors, like Tyranny. The story is okay-ish with a twist, not particularly moving or memorable, but neither 'only you can save the mankind'. The new companions are ok. One is gay, but it has always been a Bioware thing. You will pick your favourites from BG anyway. One thing I take issue with, are accusations that dungeons are bad. One is at least as good as Durlag's Tower, and the battles, on higher difficulties, are as good as it gets. Better than BG, worse than BG2, by the simple virtue of your abilities at this level. If you still play BG, play it. Otherwise, a safe pass.

Throw it down the well

Awful. Bad story that belongs in an Icewind Dale sequel (Belhifet? Really?). Completely unnecessary expansion from a studio that hasn't made anything original. Only upsides are that you can import a higher level character into BG2 and that you can just play the original. In fact, just play the original BG1 with the BG Tutu mod rather than the Enhanced Edition.
