A tragic gem

It's sad that in 2022 the review-bombing one star scores still dominate the GoG page. This expansion suffered greatly at the hands of toxic politics on both sides of the political spectrum. I maintain that the inclusion of LGBTQ characters in the game was not the problem, but the bizarre marketing leading up to release, in which a very vociferous lead writer marginalised the community by claiming that she was bringing a sexist, awful story into the 21st century and if they didn't like it, too bad. But guess what - it's a really good little module. Encounters are tight, balanced and very clever. There's multiple ways to solve a few quests - something the original, for all its flaws, didn't really do. As a huge BG2 fan, I actually prefer Dragonspear to ToB. None of the toxicitiy above takes away from some great design, and the emotional impact of hearing those voice actors again. It's a really faithful expansion that was buried beneath hideous US politics. More faithful, I would argue, than BG3. If you're on the fence, it is totally worth it whether you are a new or old player.

Great game in the style of BG1/2

After reading all the negative reviews I hesitated quite a bit before buying this. However it turns out this is not the pile of garbage some people pretend it to be. I played BG1/2 back in 1998 and over the year went through it maybe three of four times. Dragonspear adds a bunch of refreshing new content between the two games. It is not easy to bridge the story perfectly as BG2 has to start with the good canon party, no matter what happened in BG1, or what you choose in Dragonspear. Overall it did a good enough job. The story is written well and I really don't understand the hate which some of the new characters got. I rarely, if at all encountered them anyways. Played with Dorn and Baeloth and they are both in the style of other classic BG characters. The game is overall a bit more linear than BG1 and smaller than BG2. The maps are smaller and denser which works well. Some of the BG1 maps are a bit too big and empty. Pretty much everything else is like BG1 and BG2, and as I like those games there is not much to complain about. Now I can play from Nashkel all the way to the throne of Ball a continuous giant 200 something hour great fantasy opus!

Thanks, Beamdog!

I'm so happy to be able to play the iconic Baldur's Gate 1-2 series natively on Linux. Developers, please adapt BG1-2 to Ubuntu 22.04/24.04. The game is missing the 'libssl.so.1.0.0' library. A regular user will struggle to run the game. Simply create the /BG1/game/lib directory and move the 'libssl.so.1.0.0' files there. Then, in 'start.sh', run the command export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:./lib"

worth it for those who liked Baldur's Ga

The bad: I didn't like most of the voicing and the villain's motive for coming after the protagonist rang false. Unnecessary cutscenes were annoying and sometimes happened while character was being attacked. The good: The maps are well drawn. This is the best looking of the Infinity Engine games. The city maps are cramped and lack content, but after leaving the city you get spacious maps with plenty of content. Don't judge this mod until you try the dwarves versus undead quest that you will come across near the first army camp. There are a few such solid quests in this mod and they surpass the original game content. Originally, there was an expansion for Baldur's Gate called Tales of the Sword Coast and it added a few quests in Ulgoth's Beard and Durlag's Tower. The internet tells me that it cost roughly thirty dollars 26 years ago, so double that for inflation. The bottom line, for me, is that Siege of Dragonspear is a much better expansion pack than that, now costing roughly ten dollars. The question is what value these dated games should really have. To fans of this series, I would say it is easily worth this for this expansion. You are getting the best quests and the best looking maps of the series.

COMBAT ADEPT

Poor writing makes for nonsensical story

Baldur's Gate was noteworthy for its open world, for its brilliant writing, and for its strict adherence to the spirit of the Forgotten Realms setting. This abomination lacks all of those things: -You're shoehorned into a ridiculous quest that makes no sense at all. Whether you're playing as a good character or an evil one, the story gives you very little incentive to proceed with your quest. The writers probably think that this is "nuanced", but I think that it's just really sloppy storytelling. At all times, I felt apathetic about the main quest -- and utterly ambivalent towards "The Shining Lady", which I certainly can't say about Sarevok, Irenicus, and Mellisandre! -As far as I can tell, there's absolutely no open world to explore -- just sequential map segments that are extremely frustrating and annoying, as Beamdog implemented some monster-spawning "feature" that leads to swarms of low-level monsters attacking your party at random intervals. -The writers force SJW nonsense into the game, with a "transexual" character, Minsc making fun of Gamergate, a refugee crisis, and so forth. Terrible. There may have been good ways to write these issues into the story, but they were not implemented. Instead, we're faced with ham-fisted propaganda. Just abysmal.
