Not DLC, bordering on microtransactions.

I know nobody will agree with me, I'm used to that by now, but I feel I need to air this. I bought Early Access and aquired this for free. However, I don't agree with this even existing. I think if you want to reward EA purchasers, don't do it with in-game items, because it then turns it into a microtransaction (if you really like those items) that you would have to buy because you didn't buy the game before it officially released. This is not ok, microtransactions are not acceptable in a full price single player game, and people not willing to risk buying something before it's complete shouldn't be punished with higher costs in this way. Reward EA people with concept art, character sheets, artwork etc etc, but NEVER in-game items. Cosmetics or not, useful or not, this can tug at someone with fomo and it's not neccesary at all. My 2 cents, probably not worth the shit to anyone who reads, but such is life. BG3 is a very good game though, thanks Larian Studios. :)

Story and World Pulls You In!

First, the only D&D background is buying the books/guides for the new editions as they came out for my younger brother that was an avid player. I did not play the previous Baldur's Gate titles, but a friend encouraged me to give it a try despite my dislike of the turn-based combat. Replayability...this game has it in droves. Games are expensive so if I am going to add one to my library, I want to make sure that it has solid replayability potential. With so many options in character building, combined with the rolls that can change the outcome of a planned action, I can see a lot replayability with this title and that is very important to me when I select a new game to purchase. (I also love that there are no microtransactions so this is no pay to win game.) I get the feeling that even though a player may believe they have found everything there may be some things missed due to missed survival checks, etc. So with new possible things to discover on subsequent playthroughs, it continues to have new things to discover. I have a little over 25 hours of gameplay in so far, I am still in Act 1, but I'm enjoying the interactions with the companions that have joined me in camp so far. That said, I am still not fond of the turn-based combat because it takes so long to get through some battles. I cannot just set the tactics for the companions currently in the group and let them follow those while I focus the actions of my character. There is a major learning curve for me, but I am doing my best and allowing myself to get immersed in the story and character interactions. If story-driven RPG has appeal, check this game out. Your choices can definitely impact the group. Just be prepared to do some thinking and planning and maybe just maybe get sucked into a world with characters and stories that keep you coming back for more.

Rich narrative with no room for your own

I was enthralled with this game through most of the first two chapters. The feeling of weight to what you were doing, the feeling that the game was watching you and reacting to your choices... that is until the cracks started to show. Between the railroaded narrative and the save-scumming, the shine started to fade. Once I saw how little agency you really have, I started to lose interest fast. Read on to see what I mean. The Good: Fantastic graphics despite a somewhat constrained camera, rich roleplaying choices and deep non-player characters highlight a very story-centric game (so much so that there is no room for your own... more on that later). A detailed world filled with life and history. Amazing character customization and deep, weighty combat. This game, at least at first, -seems- like an entirely new type of experience in RPGs. The Bad: A narrative so rich... that there is no room left for your own. You are railroaded through the plot with very little agency. It may seem like you are making weighty choices but you will ultimately end up in the same place. You are forced to be a disgusting *redacted* for the entire game. That plot drives everything you do, and literally nothing you do can relieve you of it. I would prefer an RPG that simply let me be the character I want rather than the one they have written, and built a story that served that aim. Instead, they build the story they wanted to tell and you are shoved through it. The chief conceit of BG2 (being a child of a god) left a LOT more room for agency. Final notes: Save scum or miss a lot of content, most of the romance choices are men, all of the romance choices are non-binary, and next to none are appealing. And wow, they really missed out on a great opportunity with the guardian. In summary: this game has a beautiful wrapper, and if you don't peel it all the way, you will find a lot to like. Unfortunately the plot railroads you, and you receive very little agency in the game.
