Your home is under attack. The king is dead at the hands of Viking invaders. Hope is a distant glimmer in the fog, fading fast with every passing moment. As you rise to take your father’s place as ruler, it will fall to you to stage your defenses. But make no mistake – this is no fight for victory, but a desperate grasp for survival.
Bad North is a charming but brutal real-time tactics roguelite. Defend your idyllic island kingdom against a horde of Viking invaders, as you lead the desperate exodus of your people. Command your loyal subjects to take full tactical advantage of the unique shape of each island. Everything is at stake: fail, and watch the blood of your subjects stain the ground red.
It’s charmingly brutal, with beautiful procedurally-generated islands and adorable soldiers juxtaposed against the blood-stained realities of war. You control the broad strokes of the battle, giving high level commands to your soldiers who try their best to carry them out in the heat of the moment. It’s accessibly deep, with simple player inputs masking a dynamic combat simulation that make it inviting to new players while challenging veterans.
Keep fighting, warriors. Not for power or riches or glory, but for hope of peace to come once again in the harsh lands of the Bad North.
Key Features: REAL-TIME TACTICS ROGUELITE: Position and relocate your troops to fend off the Vikings, who each have their own counters to the threats you pose. Pick your battles and plan your evacuations carefully! Lose a commander and they’re gone forever; lose everything, and it’s game over!
INTELLIGENT UNIT CONTROLS: You command the broad strokes of your defenses and monitor positioning — your soldiers do the rest, navigating and engaging intuitively in response to the situation at hand.
PROCEDURALLY-GENERATED ISLANDS: Each island is both stylistically charming and unique in its layout. Plan your strategies around every nook and cranny, for you only get one chance to save them from the enemy invasion.
UNLOCKABLE UPGRADES:
A stronger, smarter defense leads to greater rewards. Use these to develop your subjects from a ragtag militia into seasoned warriors.
Bad North is a miniature tactical roguelike. With (at most) 4 units, you defend tiny islands against viking invaders, with no story beyond survival. Simple mechanics and pleasingly spare visuals & sound (throat singing!) make a strong first impression, but the gameplay has little variety and peters out quickly. There are no tough choices, there's always "one true path". It's repetitive and lacks replay value, a big problem for a roguelike where death means a restart! Worth beating once, though.
While it is a very humble game in terms of ambience and gameplay, I've been hooked to the game from the get-go.
It is definitely a slow paced game annd may not appeal to people who expect a Nordic-action RPG-like adventure.
The game is essenitllay controlling troops in real time to defend little Islands all across the map which you progress one-at-a-time after completing the previous phase. You can choose the Islands you want to raid in order to gain specifc boosts to your legion.
As you progress, you are privy to more gadgets and contraptions using which you decide how you want to defend the Islands.
Its a very relaxed-paced indie game that drags you in using its simple graphics but addictive mechanics.
Fantastic graphics, animation, and sound. Solid, simple controls. You need to manage different squads with various strengths or weaknesses as waves of enemies attack. You have to keep on your feet, such as hiding from archers and holding back as the boats land - attacking at the last moment so their boats don't ram you. Gets pretty difficult after about 10 islands.
Extraordinary strategy action game with rpg elements..
Better have good mouse and firm surface as it is challenging to be in few places at same time.
Just try, it is so addicting. If you like Tower Defence or in this case Island Defence games then here it is.
I like it`s music too.
Its a bit annoying that the game cranks up the difficulty from 5 to 12 when you get to the checkpoint levels.
The game overall HAS only 3 unit types,. Archers, Swordsmen and Pikes.
Archers are far less useless then the other two.
Archers miiight do damage but they also might miss and enemys keep moving to their target when not oppossed directly, which archers don't do because they are allergic to close combat.
Its also not very usefull to have more then four units as long as your first four aren't fully upgraded.
In the end you then use two groups of oikes and two groups of swordsmen with shields for support and protection against enemy archers.
And even then, with such focus, the checkpoint levels will be a mess.
I recommend activating the ability to repeat levels. Anything else would just make he frustration worse.
