Promising concept, lackluster execution
I've been waiting for this to come out since watching a 30 minute preview on Youtube. Unfortuanately, that preview covered aobut 25 - 30% of the entire game. Pros: The art design is very good. It very well captures that early black and white cartoon aesthetic. The sound design is excellent. There isn't much music, but the ambient sound and distorted vocals of the monsters, coupled with the environmental sound like low frequency waves, do very well to establish and maintain tension. Cons: Length. This game is somewhere between 90 minutes and three hours of content, depending on player skill. Plot: Nothing, but nothing, is actually resolved. You literally get dumped in a "check how many collectibles you got" room, walk into a room with a projector for the credits, and walk out of an exit labeled exit. If there's a secret final act, I couldn't find it. I didn't bother hunting for all the collectibles, though. Story: Similar to the plot, nothing is explained and nothing is resolved. There is no explanation for why everything the player sees is horrible monsters, why the house bends in on itself, the constant centipedes, and etc. There are implications that the main character's father is an alcoholic who beats the main character and his wife, and the marketing and pre-release content implies a demon centipede climbed into the player character's ear during a steamboat trip some time ago and did something bad inside, but literally nothing you see is actually explored, only presented. You just get thrown into horrid scenarios and chased by monsters that kill you, and the closest you come to a resolution is a cheese-themed RPG style level where you pick up a shield and sword and thwap monsterous representations of the PC, his mother, and his father before fleeing. The PC even says "I don't feel like bad cheese any more" right before you get dumped in the exit room. It's like two entire acts are missing.
