Unique, fun, and addicting

The closest comparison I can make, is to Darkest Dungeon. You go into a dungeon, wind through its corridors, find treasure, and after (hopefully) beating the final boss, take the treasure back to town, where you purchase upgrades to help you on future ascents. The big difference is the inventory mechanic. You'll collect weapons, armor, trinkets, consumables, and resource packs. Based on how you arrange them, you'll gain different synergies or penalties for your combat encounters. Combat is turn based, where you have x-amount of energy to spend, and weapons/items cost a certain amount of energy to use. Certain enemy attacks can add "hazards" to your backpack, which can inhibit your items, but which you can erase by spending energy, or prevent with health. My biggest nit-pick is the town building aspect. At the start of the game it can be very overwhelming. There are a TON of citizens, and a TON of buildings. Many of them have quests and research, and it's hard to remember which is where. A quality-of-life building is unlocked well into the game which greatly improves this, but I would've liked it from the start. The UI for the town and construction was another sore point. In fact, I'd say the game would be MUCH improved, if the town building mechanics were more streamlined (simply a dashboard with stats, a buildings menu, a build menu, and a list of important NPCs). There were also a couple bugs (missing assets, text errors). But on the plus side, there is a TON of content; all of the dungeon loot, the quests, enemies, bosses, unlockable characters all felt very unique. Overall, I'd say the game is more than worth the $20 asking price, even with the bugs and nitpicks. I've had a very enjoyable time.

Excellent casual, fun, turn-based game

- Pros: I've been loving this game. There's lots of replayability. The game has changed a lot since early access. Now there's a town-builder, and you can unlock items as you progress. There's also new items, a research tree, and plenty of Quality-of-Life improvements. Overall, if you just want a non-stressful game for after work to spend 15-45 minutes per dungeon run after work, this is the game for you. Gameplay is fun, engaging, stimulating, and at time challenging. - Cons: I would like, however, if they would allow unlocked items to be toggled on/off, so that you aren't bombarded with a lot of unwanted items during certain runs. The Atlas shows all the research buildings and personnel, but the Town Hall doesn't list all the buildings (like the Schoolhouse or individual researchers/unlockers, like Matthew). So sometimes you have to go into the Atlas instead of using the Town Hall, which defeats the whole point about the Town Hall being a quality-of-life improvement. (It's still better than visiting each building. But feels like wasted potential.) There are still a few bugs, like items not appearing when clicking to research - or some items appearing as a prerequisite for research, despite that not being the case. And some portions of the Atlas section in Research disappear completely during combat (or while in the Dungeon), which causes some issues when trying to check the Research value of items obtained in as combat rewards. There's also scrolling issues in the UI. Sometimes the content will be scrolled beyond the top of the page. Sometimes scrolling will be locked, preventing part of the page from being read. Which is especially annoying when half the content is outside the page. - Conclusion: Game presents loads of value, and with further bug fixes and further quality-of-life improvements. Absolutely worth it, in my opinion. But only if you like casual, simple, retro-style games.

Fun for Short or Long Play Sessions!

This is a great game with clever design, adorable art, and great depth despite the deceptively simple premise. The story mode is a nice touch as well.

Cozy, strategy?

This is a deceptively deep strategy game. From your configuration to your choice of items you pick up to your town, every thing has some kind of strategy, and makes it fun. Stumbling on some of the synergies has been interesting. The only things I have not liked are some of the UI action choices. There are few actions that I execute and it does not act like I expect. One thing I would love to see in it is a list of effects or a way to know what synergies you might like or use for a run. I have found the round shield and shivs to be hysterical when I can get them in a run for example. Shivs that hit for 12+ points are fun, and you can put 8 shivs around a shield.
