Description
ATOM RPG is a turn-based post-apocalyptic indie roleplaying game, inspired by classic CRPGs like Fallout 1 - 2, Wasteland, Baldur's Gate and many others.

In 1986 both the Soviet Union and the Western Bloc were destroyed in mutual nuclear bombings. You are one of the survivors of the nuclear Holocaust. Your mission - to explore the wild and wondrous world of the Soviet Wasteland. To earn your place under the sun. And to investigate a shadowy conspiracy, aimed at destroying all that is left of life on Earth.

ATOM RPG is:

  • A powerful character creation tool, aimed at making the wasteland hero you want to portray!
  • A balanced roleplaying system inspired by GURPS. Each stat combination provides a unique gaming experience, unique dialogues, and new ways to solve some of the quests!
  • Dozens of skills, from lockpicking to gambling!
  • Many hours of gameplay on all sorts of locations. Meet the other survivors in a brave new settlement, built from the dust of the old world. Venture into the wilds, where mutated creatures and savage bandits lurk. Work out the secrets of an old military bunker. Or simply lose yourself, fishing at a scenic pond...
  • Turn-based combat, inspired by Fallout 1 and 2.
  • Random encounters with the dwellers of the Soviet Wasteland - both friendly and dangerous. Sometimes all at the same time...
  • Many deep, multiple-choice dialogues that feel like real conversations with the unique NPCs of the game.
  • Nonlinear gameplay! Dozens of quests, each with many alternative solutions. Play the game like You want to!

Can't Touch Anyone Most of the Time

I know. I'm old. I'm cranky. I get it. But if someone is in front of me and I miss hitting him 3 f*cking times in a row with an old rusty knife, then it's obvious character is borderline retarded. This makes no sense seeing is how I'm playing a miliary person. I shouldn't suck this bad with a knife. But then again, my character thought it was a grand idea to sit on a log in the middle of nowhere with his rifle not easily within arms reach when trouble came. Meanwhile, everyone else I run into gets 3 turns to shoot, reload, and shoot again. Folks, this is what happens to a country that kills all of the intelligent people in the early 20th century: you get dumbasses as video game characters and developers. This is lazy and poor design. With the original Fallouts, this type of garbage can be forgiven because it was all new. Nowadays? No excuse. I shouldn't miss shooting a goddamn rat at my feet. 2 stars because the music was perfectly fitting.

micro-review

Feels like a cheap Fallout (1 or 2) clone. - No voice lines for dialogues - Lacks a lot of QoL features - Guns have ridiculously short ranges - Bad writing - Character should not be able to just re-roll checks https://pixelloot.com

Promising, but unrefined

I've only played an hour or so, and I'm moving on to look for something better. The impression is that the game is 60-80% finished. It's rough and glitchy. The details haven't been tightened and the flow is still uneven. It's missing the cohesive, polished feel that you add with testing and care in the last months of development. For example, there's no quest log, waypoints, or clear flow to the tutorial. It doesn't teach important control concepts, and it's easy to get wierd results (my companion pulled out a gun and started shooting me in the melee practice area). The UI is and game design are tedius. Windows cover a small part of the screen, but they lock out the rest of the UI and clicking on other parts of the UI is just ignored, forcing you to click the small close button where a well polished game would either let you use the other elements or at least close the top dialog to get out of your way. They pepper rooms and areas with a half dozen or more small clickable objects. You have to individually open each, deal with one or two items, then find the small close button, etc. It's not bad, just needs refinement. Another example: It's difficult to see what's going on and find your way around. You wind up doing a grid search because there's no guidance to the important points. One of the first quests involves picking mushrooms near the fence. There are mushrooms near the fence, but they're the wrong mushrooms. You have to randomly walk around until you stumble across the right mushrooms, literally covering the entire zone in a search pattern, to find every available mushroom, or you fail the quest. It's the only way. The system and story look promising, and if you can get past the lack of refinement, it might be a good game, but I'll write off my $11 and try something else.

If you have the time to kill...go for it

Good graphics, nice setting in Soviet background. I enjoyed playing for a bit but it's one of those games which just chews up time. Running around doing menial tasks to get ahead. Lots of crafting - if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I can't stnad crafting in games hence the 2 stars. Also, the screen is very zoomed in and there is no AI help on the map to point you to where to go. I left the game for a while and thought to come back after a long break. Nothing makes sense and I just don't have the time to read a whole bunch of text and try to navigate where to go - I'd rather go work in my own garden and craft something in my own shed. Probably worth a 3 star rating if you have the time and enjoy crafting.

Pathetic POV:

This game is fun(?) to play and very funny. I probably should mention I really dislike the combat though. It pretty much punishes you for not packing SMG's, automatic rifles and several bombs. I really would like to know what type of build end game enemies are using! I certainly can't take as much punishment as they do and I'm supposed to be a big lad in the game. Memorize the quick save button in advance... If you're like me you'll probably piss the wrong guy off early on and get gunned down when you're holding a rusty ass rifle you got from an old corn farmer. This will piss you off big time but I ask you to try again. I feel like not playing through this game is a bad idea, you won't learn anything new from it or anything but it's one of the most fun I've had in a long time. My advice? Leave the min-maxing and 100% completion out of your view for your first try. (Should probably keep your DEX above 6 though *cough cough*). Maybe put your luck to 10 for maximum meme power or something. Could it be better? Yes, certainly. Still it's good for what it is. Just wish they made it more RPG and less "Please don't one-shot me generic enemy-nevermind, I'll just load my game again..."
